Cobalt Girl
“Oh, hey, hi.” Michelle stuttered coming out of the men’s restroom. “It’s not what you think.”
Mac, her best friend, checked the sign on the door thinking maybe he got them mixed up. “Okay,” he replied hesitantly but hoping for doozy of an explanation.
Michelle pulled her jacket tightly closed, hoping to hide a strip of bright blue that she hadn’t quite tucked away under her regular clothes and tried to sidestep out of his way but he moved with her. “I would love to know what you think I’m thinking.”
“No, you really wouldn’t. It’s kind of lame.”
Mac raised an eyebrow at her. “Wrong door? Or romantic tryst?”
Michelle rolled her hazy blue eyes and tried once more to wiggle past Mac’s well muscled farm boy physique. He took up most of the space in the tiny hall to the bathrooms and he didn’t budge.
Mac was dying to find out what Michelle had been doing in the men’s room. She was a straight shooter, a goodie two shoes, so wrong door was the most likely.
Michelle pushed open the door to the men’s bathroom and let Mac get a brief look before letting the door swing back closed.
“Are you two going in or out?” A voice beckoned from Mac’s backside.
“Out!” Michelle grabbed his hand and dragged him out of the way and out the side door of Ed’s bar and grill.
“What’s going on?” Mac demanded to know when they stopped beside his monster truck, well hidden from prying eyes.
Michelle peeled back her jacket to reveal the bright blue of her suit beneath her blouse.
Mac cheeks flushed at first then shook his head. “No way!”
Michelle cocked her head at him.
“You’re…her? Cobalt Girl?” His eyes narrowed at her. “Ha ha! You almost had me.” He laughed half heartedly, realizing she was serious.
He looked her up and down and sideways and couldn’t quite make it real in his mind. “But I’ve known you forever, Mish. There is no way I wouldn’t know something like this.”
He turned around stuffing his hands in his jeans and mumbled something to himself. “You never told me. All these years and you never told me? You’re Cobalt Girl.”
“I hate that name. I’m just Michelle. And I couldn’t tell you.”
“All those times when you simply took off for what seemed like no reason.” Mac was recalling time after time when she suddenly disappeared or reappeared, so random.
Michelle shrugged and nodded.
