Goodbyes

She let out a quiet sigh. Her hand grazed the uneven surface of the wooden table where many loud bouts of laughter had begun. She looked out the window at the leaves on the large oak tree gently swaying with the wind. Their large oak tree.


Her fingers ran into engravings on the wood, letters and shapes that the children had carved with pencils back when they were young. Barely old enough to know their own names.


A soft smile crossed her face, as she recalled how the boys would giggle with excitement knowing they would get in trouble once Mom would find out that they had drawn where they should not have. Playfully screaming and running away when Mom would return home and catch them.
