POEM STARTER
Mysteries of the Night
Whether something natural and beautiful like the stars, or something more sinister, write a poem that focuses on things that are most prominent at night.
Lovers’ Midnight Walk
“Use the lighter, my love.”
“I can’t get it to work…”
“Here, let me help you—“
“Wait! What was that?”
She holds still in the dark
While bats flutter about
Her hands start to tremble
Fear accompanies doubt
“It’s okay, just the bats.”
“Are you sure we’re alone?”
“Yeah, let’s keep going,
We don’t need the light.”
He grips her hand tightly
And feels his way through the cave
They are going to do this
Before dawn takes her away
“We need this to work—
Do you still have my blade?”
“It’s right here, my love.
We have the night on our side.”
As they creep towards the alter
And stars blossom above
The cave walls recede
And night coos like a dove
They kneel amongst bones
And in reverent decree
Bind their souls to each other
From earth’s bodies released
The blade clatters on stone
The small flame soon dies out
Their blood mingles with starlight
Their dying hearts were made proud
