POEM STARTER
Who are we when no one is watching?
Write a poem that answers this question.
Who Are You?
“Who are we when no one is watching?” You may ask, well, This time, I’m not a brave soul, I’m a _broken_ soul.
I ran in the dead of night, I had to be anywhere _but _the_ _library. My boyfriend had been holding hands and snuggling another girl.
In his free time, he sometimes worked at the library so I came to see him… I’d always wondered why he said he was always busy, rarely having time for me.
Running so fast, adrenaline pulsing through me, tears streaming down my face, sobs echoing the quiet park. My feet gave out, leaving me in the mud, my hands and pant legs covered. Sobs choked me, and I felt myself breaking. “_Why_!” I screamed out, “WHY?”
“You said you lo-lo-loved me,” I shivered, the tears still falling.
I heard someone coming behind me. “Evelyn?” a man called out, sounding like my brother's best friend.
I tried to speak, but nothing came out. I made a small noise, and then the man touched my shoulder. Turning around to see him, his eyes filled with curiosity—Ethan was right here. How did he know where I was?
He seemed to read my mind, “I was in the library…” He caught his breath, “Are you okay?”
“No,” I choked out.
He helped pull me up—I tried but fell again. This time he got a tighter grip and pulled me up. He opened his arms wide and soon enough I was in his arms, soft sobs escaping me. He held my head and gently patted my back. “It’s going to be okay.”
“R—really?” I sobbed.
“Yes,” His tone was soft and very _matter-of-fact. _
“Did you know about him cheating?” I asked, still having trouble breathing.
“No, I found out the same time you did. I’m _so_ _sorry_ Evelyn, you deserve better.”
“Thank you.”
He kept his arms on my shoulders but moved so he could see me. “Do you want to talk about it?”
I wanted to say not really, but I _needed_ to.
“He—-He,” I pointed to the air, imagining him, “Tricked me,” Tears streaming down my face, again.
Ethan was patient, waiting for me to finish. “He told me he _loved_ me,” I choked out, my eyes pierced with sadness.
“Did you love him?” He asked quietly.
“I thought so—maybe _not_, I don’t know.”
“It’s okay to not know, after everything he’s done.”
“Yeah.”
“Let’s get you washed up,” He carried me to his house, on his back.
We arrived and he grabbed some clothing from his closet, “I have some old clothes from my sister,” He handed me a sweatshirt and sweatpants. “There’s some undergarments there too.”
“Thank you. It means a lot.”
“Yeah, no problem.”
He waited for her to get out of the shower—and while he waited—he made her some chicken and noodles—she really liked that.
“Mm, What is this?” She smelled the noodles, a comforting smell, coming out of the bedroom with the sweatsuit on.
“I made some Chicken and noodles.”
“_Really_?” Her sad eyes lit up slightly.
They both ate at the table, “So.. Do you want to watch something?”
“I’m not sure.”
“Oh—and also, I called your mom and told her you’re here.”
“Thank you—_so much,_” She was overwhelmed with gratitude.
“You’re welcome, it’s the least I can do.”
“Also, wasn’t there a show you liked? Gilmore girls? You want to watch that?”
“_Really_?” She asked him. And how did he remember so much about her?
“Yeah, let me put it on.”
Evelyn smiled wholeheartedly, he loved seeing her smile.
“I even have some of your favorite chocolate.”
“Since when?” her eyebrows creased in curiosity.
The truth was he always had some at his house—just in case.
This man was a different Ethan, She didn’t know this caring side of him. She knew him well and he always took care of her, but she didn’t expect this.
They at on the couch eating Dark chocolate and watching Gilmore, Ethan seems to have no problems watching it. She was extremely grateful for his company and his care.
“I know I’ve said this 20 times, but really truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”
It was time for bed and they both lingered for a second before opening their doors—across from each other.
“Ethan?” She asked, softly.
“Yeah?” He responded, his hand still on the door nob.
“I will pay your kindness back to you! You won’t regret this for a second.” She smiled at him, then entered the guest room. He couldn’t help but smile.
_That_ night, Evelyn decided she wanted to start loving Ethan. It would take her some time, but she knew he’d take care of her, and her family loved him. And besides, something in her shifted seeing him care for her—no one had cared for her like this before. She squealed quietly in her bed, then tried to get some rest.
