POEM STARTER
Write a villanelle about something that has been abandoned.
The villanelle is a type of poem characterised by its repeating lines and ABA rhyme scheme which create a lyrical effect. There are a number of other rules for a full villanelle if you wish to incorporate them.
And Within The Years
And within the years, we’ve grown together,
The love has faded, though you’re still my home.
I shaped myself to be what you would rather.
We built a life, each season tied with tether,
Yet something in my blood has turned to stone,
And within the years, we’ve grown together.
Your hands are warm, but I no longer shiver,
No spark ignites beneath the skin I own.
I shaped myself to be what you would rather.
My mind insists that this should last forever,
Yet deep inside, my body tells me no.
And within the years, we’ve grown together.
I wonder if I’m barren—if I’ll never
Bring life to something love refused to grow.
I shaped myself to be what you would rather.
Perhaps I lost myself in pleasing—whether
I ever bloomed at all, I’ll never know.
And within the years, we’ve grown together,
I shaped myself to be what you would rather.
