Write a poem, with a set structure, which centres around the theme of confession.

Father Forgive Me {Part 1}

Forgive me Father for I have sinned

I wish the words were not spoken as soon as they leave my lips but I cannot rescind.

Rage — no not rage, that’s the sour taste of shame rising in my belly.

As this rotund robed man listens to my woes, practically jolly.

What have you done, my child?

The words catch in my throat, knowing I am defiled.

I tell the truth; my sin is that I have breathed another day

The priest is silent for a long while to my dismay.

Why would breathing be a sin my dear?

He asks after a while as I struggle to hold back a tear.

Every breath I take is owed to another—

He interrupts. Truly my dear, we are all the same, we all owe breath to our own Mother.

No, I breathe my fear and shame making me sound absurd.

You misunderstand, I don’t breathe for my Mother, let me reword.

What I mean is my heart lives in her hands and she’s gentle as a giant

Oh, I see you mean Mother Nature then? Well, she is reliant.

No, Father. I wail. Can’t you see?

This woman is as tangible as you and me!

I’m afraid you’re speaking in riddles, young one.

Father please, if you don’t forgive me I’ll be undone.

I would, my child. I would, but I can’t see the crime in loving your friend.

But don’t you see father? She is no friend; she will be my bitter end!

Now that’s quite enough! Out with it now girl, or you may leave unforgiven.

Oh God! Father please help me from letting her in my mind unbidden.

I have had enough! I’m tired of these riddles and this web you’ve spun

When you’re ready to speak the truth you may speak it to a nun.

Father! Wait, you must understand if you don’t save me I’ll fall into temptation…

Because, you see, I have always been the weakest abomination.

Abomination, what nonsense is this? Spit it out! Speak plainly!

Forgive me father, but my sin… her name is Amy!
