Fledge peered over what felt like a limitless expanse. Even with how tiny Buzzy appeared, Fledge could tell what she was doing. Any time Buzzy noticed a bit of water on the ground, she would stare at it for… well… too long. Buzzy wanted to make sure that each feather was in its place. So instead of trying to find a way back to Fledge, Buzzy was obsessing over her image.

Fledge squawked loudly at Buzzy, but she didn’t seem to notice. Next, Fledge hurled a rock toward Buzzy, but it fell hopelessly into the canyon. There was simply no reaching Buzzy.

Night soon fell, and the flat desert reflected moonlight in a way that fledge had never encountered. Finally, Buzzy looked over at fledge. But something was off. As Buzzy walked to the lip of the canyon, large bits of moonlight seemed to fall from her eyes. Fledge expected Buzzy to take flight, but she instead walked over the edge, falling quickly out of sight.
