Every night just before bed Bradley would walk past the master bedroom where he used to sleep with his wife, Amelia. They had always had problems but he never thought it would lead to this. He took her disappearing especially hard, considering she was pregnant and their relationship was getting significantly better. For the past 4 months he was sleeping in the guest bedroom. But he had often wondered if maybe it was time to push forward and move on. The police said after 3 days it would seem unlikely that she would be coming back since there was no indication of her being kidnapped. But she couldn’t have just run away because even her family hasn’t heard from her. How does someone just disappear without a trace? He opens his phone and looks at the last picture he took of Amelia. It’s her with a big smile as she’s about to walk out the door for a morning jog. Her hair in a ponytail, bright pink leggings, a white tank top and pink Nike sneakers on, her baby bump visible. Bradley smiles at the picture and heads into the kitchen for a glass of water. He never liked to use ice because of the immense coldness of it when it would hit his teeth while he drank. But tonight he was in a mood for ice in his water. On his way to the guest room he stops in front of the master room. He stares at the door reminiscing of the moments he shared with his wife. He opened the door and a brush of air blew past him leaving a trace of her smell, a hint of vanilla coconut. He closes his eyes and takes in the smell of her. It was enough for him to step into the bedroom. Nothing has changed. The bed is unmade with pillows tossed on the floor. Her black dress coat and slim black dress with black heels lay on the floor next to her side of the bed. The night before she disappeared the two had gone to a black tie event for Amelia’s job. Bradley sits on her side of the bed and places his glass of water on the bedside table. He leans forward and picks up Amelia’s jacket and holds it close to his body, he brings it up to his nose and breathes in her scent while closing his eyes tightly. He lays down on the bed while keeping the jacket tightly pressed against his chest, slowly slipping into a deep sleep, the first he’s had since Amelia’s disappearance.
Bradley wakes up in a jolt. He looks at his brown leather golden trimmed wristwatch. “Shit!” Bradley says in a panic. He runs to the kitchen and grabs his car keys and quickly runs out the front door. Whilst driving down the street Bradley noticed everything and everyone is moving backwards. He slows down to a crawl and looks out his car window confused. Just as he’s about to ask what’s going on he abruptly stops the car. Amelia walks in front of the car, she’s also moving backwards. “Amelia,” Bradley says softly. “Amelia,” he shouts. Amelia keeps moving. Bradley presses on the gas and proceeds to follow her.
Amelia enters a house not too far from the one he lived in with her. It’s significantly larger with the outside painted in a charcoal black color with off white trimming. Bradley parks his car and goes up to the window to peak in. Just as Amelia walks in two kids are seen running backwards past her as if they are chasing each other. A car pulls up into the driveway, so Bradley ducks into the bushes. He can’t quite make out who is getting out of the car moving into the house backwards. Just as the man enters the house Amelia is there to kiss him. The man moves through into the living room where Bradley is looking through the window. “Huh,” Bradley gasps and pushes back from the window. It’s him, but how is this possible. Bradley is looking at a replica of himself. He doesn’t know what to make of this. He crouches down into the bushes and leans up against the house. He lightly bangs his head against the house and shoves his head in his hands. “What’s happening to me,” Bradley whispers as a tear rolls down his cheek. He quickly gets up and runs to his car. He fumbles getting the keys into the ignition and screams in the process. Once the car is started he screeches off in a hurry, leaving tire tracks in the road with smoke following. As Bradley is driving frantically through the neighborhood he hits someone. The person flys up onto the car then tumbles to the ground in front of the car. Bradley immediately stops the car and runs to check on the person. It looks like a woman, she’s wearing bright pink leggings and a white tank top covered in blood, and pink Nike sneakers. her leg has a bone protruding from her shin and her arm is dangling loose from the shoulder. Bradley rolls her over and can’t make out her face. There’s blood and scrapes covering her face making her unrecognizable. He also can’t help but to notice the baby bump the woman has. “Oh my God,” Bradley says in terror. An ambulance arrives. Bradley is so perturbed he no longer notices everything moving in an odd backwards fashion. He follows the ambulance to the hospital nearby.
Once at the hospital, Bradley rushes in and asks about the girl they just brought in. “Do you know her, sir?” The doctor asks. “No, I mean, I don’t think so... I can’t be sure,” Bradley grabs his head and a bead of sweat rolls down his temple. “Well, we’ll write her down as a Jane Doe, unless you’re able to provide us with more information?” “Huh, uh, no, no,” Bradley says with a blank look on his face. The doctor walks away backwards.
Back at Bradley and Amelia’s house Bradley places his keys on the counter top. He’s still a bit shaken up. He grabs a glass of water before heading up to bed. He places his glass of water on the bedside table and takes his clothes off to take a shower in the guest bedroom. Bradley, feeling refreshed after the hot shower, was ready to try and get some rest for the night and figure everything out in the morning.
“Bradley! Bradley wake up!!” Amelia’s voice is heard in the distance. “Bradley!” Amelia shouts. Bradley jolts up in a panic. He’s on his side of the bed in their bedroom. He looks around the room and noticed Amelia pacing back and forth in her bra and pink leggings looking through her drawers. “Have you seen my white tank top anywhere?” Bradley looks confused. He notices her outfit for the black tie event hanging above the door freshly pressed. The smell of vanilla coconut fills the air. A glass of water sits his bedside table. Bradley feels an enormous sense of deja vu. “Babe!” Amelia says irritated. “Huh, oh, I think I saw it in the bottom left drawer,” Bradley says. Amelia dresses and Bradley follows her downstairs to walk her out. Amelia and Bradley embrace in a kiss. He’s bends down to kiss her belly. “Wait! Let me take a picture of this moment.” Bradley snaps a photo of Amelia before she walks out the door.
