Moon Bloom

Burrowed down and hidden amougst the many budding wild flowers of the field, it lies in wait for the moment we anticipate. The dusk becomes twilight becomes starry night, the sun hidden on the other side of the horizon. While the other beings of nature crave the sun, leaves lifting, faces turning to catch its warm rays of light, this one finds sanctuary with its opposition. It will settle for the reflection of life, seeking its home beneath a heaven full of planets and stars.

Look! Don’t miss it now! It quivers beneath the slanted slivers of moon shone upon it, unfurling gracefully in chase of the suns mirror. A prickly spine twists to stand up tall, its pronged leaves stretching out to make room for the budding flower. Inky black sepals encase petals as silver as the skylights above it, almost reluctant to let them go from inside their cage. Pealed back only by the eager push of the flower within, the petals burst forth, the long awaited promise of the full moon finally satisfied. As a werewolf cannot resist the call of the moon, so does this greedy plant reach for a night it cannot touch.

Then, like how the ripples on a lake return to stillness, it settles, radiating a gentle glow just as the moon illuminates the world beneath it. All that is left it the cool breeze of the night drifting through the leaves and ruffling the petals as the rest of the world waits for dawn.
