COMPETITION PROMPT
Two people keep bumping into each other in different cities while traveling for work. They consider whether it's fate or coincidence.
Whims of the Universe
Ever had those moments where life feels like it’s playing a grand cosmic joke on you? Well, my life was full of such moments, and my latest escapade in the world of corporate consulting was no exception.
Picture this: a busy airport, people bustling about, the familiar scent of overpriced coffee in the air, and me, with my roller bag racing against time to catch a connecting flight.
Cue our first encounter.
I’m on my way to my gate when I collide with a total stranger. The impact wasn’t so much physical as it was metaphysical – it was the kind of crash that happens when two people’s worlds briefly collide and a spark ignites. The moment our eyes met, I felt like I was a character in a cheesy romance movie. He was tall, with dark, curly hair and a pair of hazel eyes that held entire galaxies within them.
“Whoa, watch out there!” I exclaimed, trying to balance myself as my bag threatened to tip over.
He flashed me a warm, disarming smile, and I realized I had just witnessed a masterpiece of charm.
“Sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going,” he said in a voice that could make angels weep.
“No worries,” I replied, trying to act as cool as possible, which wasn’t very cool at all. “I’m known to create chaos everywhere I go.”
He chuckled, and I was smitten.
We both had flights to catch, so we exchanged names and a few witty remarks before parting ways, each of us on our own respective planes.
Fast forward a few months later. I’m in Chicago for a client meeting, and as I stroll down the city’s busy streets in the late afternoon, I make a pit stop at a deep-dish pizza place. It’s then that I hear a voice that’s all too familiar.
“Deep-dish pizza? Really? I thought New Yorkers were all about thin crust.”
I turn around to find him, grinning at me with that same smile. The universe was playing a peculiar trick on me.
I sheepishly shrugged, “You caught me red-handed. But we’re in Chicago, right?”
We found ourselves in a deep conversation as we waited for our orders. We talked about work, travel, and our love for unconventional pizza.
Then came the clincher: he was headed to the same conference I was attending in Atlanta a few months later. I was convinced that the universe was up to something mischievous, yet I couldn’t help but look forward to our next serendipitous meeting.
This pattern continued. We crossed paths in San Francisco, Seattle, and other cities as if the universe had an elaborate plan to bring us together. The cynic in me started to believe in fate.
In San Francisco, we stood at the Golden Gate Bridge, the cool wind ruffling our hair, and he looked at me with a sly grin. “This must be fate.”
I quirked an eyebrow. “Or just really great timing.”
In Atlanta, our paths converged once again. As we found ourselves attending the same conference, he grinned. “You’re following me, aren’t you?”
“Please, I’m the one who lives life in the fast lane. I should be saying that.”
But here’s the thing: as much as I liked to brush it off as mere coincidence, each encounter made me wonder if maybe, just maybe, there was something more to this. The universe had been up to some mischief, but I was starting to think it was the cosmic kind.
Our next meeting was in New Orleans, and when he appeared at a jazz bar where I was swaying to the music, I couldn’t deny the sense of destiny that was pulling us together. We shared stories, laughed, and danced the night away.
In Los Angeles, we watched the sunset from a rooftop restaurant, sipping cocktails as the city lights glittered below us. He leaned in closer, our fingers brushing. “Do you believe in fate?”
I looked into his eyes and couldn’t help but smile. “I’m not sure. But I do know that I’m grateful for every time fate or coincidence decided to bring us together.”
And so, as we sat there, watching the city lights shimmer, I realized that maybe it didn’t matter if it was fate or coincidence. What mattered was that we found each other in the middle of our chaotic, ever-changing lives, and in that serendipity, I found a love that was truly remarkable.
