How It Begins

“Astonishing,” he says with no hint of surprise whatsoever.


“What is?” I ask.


He hands me the flyer.


‘Could your neighbor be a terrorist?’ It reads in bold letters across the top.


‘Foreign powers have been eager to take over our nation for decades, and now they have succeeded.’


The flyer went on to outline what could make your neighbors ‘suspicious:’ Non-English speaking, Muslim religion, young, possibly here as a graduate student.


“I’m just surprised it took them this long to start spreading these lies,” he says flatly.


“And it’s not like they need our help pointing people out, what with those soldiers engulfing every city and town not already destroyed,” I answer.


“So the question is,” he puts down his coffee and looks me in the eye. “What are we going to do about it?”
