WRITING OBSTACLE
Submitted by Maranda Quinn
Show a powerful emotion – love, grief, rage - in a quiet, everyday moment.
Instead of writing a dramatic and drawn out scene, think about how subtle actions and sensory details can carry the weight of the feeling.
Domestic
Samuel drys dishes beside his wife, watching her scrub diligently. Her hair is tied up in a ponytail, brown eyes locked on the task at hand. She bites her lips absentmindedly. He notices the little scratch on her cheek from where she tried nuzzling their cat, and the memory makes him smile.
“Your slowing down.” She teases.
“Maybe your going too fast.” He quips.
She gives him a sideways glance, but she smirks and presses on. Samuel feels the warmth in his chest. He gently bumps her shoulder with his. She retaliates in kind. He splashed a bit of soapy water at her. She shrieks.
“Sam!” She says indignant. Soapy bubbles rest on her face.
“What?” He laughs.
She splashes back. He laughs harder.
