POEM STARTER
Write a villanelle about something that has been abandoned.
The villanelle is a type of poem characterised by its repeating lines and ABA rhyme scheme which create a lyrical effect. There are a number of other rules for a full villanelle if you wish to incorporate them.
Has been Abandoned
A house once filled with laughter now stands still,
The garden wild with thorns where flowers grew,
Silent walls echo what time can’t fulfill.
The windows stare, like eyes that time can’t heal,
Where children’s voices once were pure and true,
A house once filled with laughter now stands still.
The door hangs crooked, as if time could feel,
Its hinges rusted, whispers from the blue,
Silent walls echo what time can’t fulfill.
The roof is caving, as the years reveal
A memory fading, once vibrant hue,
A house once filled with laughter now stands still.
The air is thick with dust, the air surreal,
Where dreams had once taken flight and flew,
Silent walls echo what time can’t fulfill.
Yet in the quiet, one can almost steal
A shadow of the life that once they knew,
A house once filled with laughter now stands still,
Silent walls echo what time can’t fulfill.
