COMPETITION PROMPT
An elaborately wrapped gift is left on your front doorstep, but when you take it inside to open it, it seems it's not quite what you thought it was...
Purple and Gold
I heard a loud knock at the door—immediately followed up by my dogs barking incessantly loud. I jumped up from my chair and looked into the peephole. I saw no one, and considering how late it was already, I decided to just go to bed.
I woke up to my alarm telling me it was time for work. I rolled over and turned the alarm off. The clock read 5:30 AM. “Why?” I asked myself out loud. I begrudgingly crawled out of bed and made my way to the restroom. My dogs followed me. The morning routine ensued. I fed my dogs and walked over to the door to take them out. “Let’s go potty, okay?” I stepped into the entryway of the house to put on my shoes. I put Bones’ collar around his neck and petted his brown fur. I turned around, looked out the screen door, and froze.
There was a box wrapped in deep royal purple and gold. I had never seen such gorgeous paper. It shone even in the early morning dusk. “It’s so pretty!” I shrieked. My dog whined a little, and I muttered a soft apology to him about the shriek.
I decided to take my dogs out first and come back to the present. Once I was back inside from taking out both dogs, I went outside alone to see what the present was. There was no name tag. No writing on it anywhere. My family lived miles and miles away, so there was no way it was from them. It could be someone from work. I hesitated to pick it up, but I figured I could always ask my husband where it came from once he was home from work.
I took the present inside and set it on the kitchen bar. I continued to get ready for work and as I made my way back into the kitchen, I looked at the stove clock. It read 6:15 AM. I still had some time before work, so I let the excitement get the best of me. Leaving the present placed on the bar, I gently tore through the paper with scissors. It was a plain cardboard box. I opened it slowly and carefully lifted one half of the cardboard box to reveal gold tissue paper. I opened the other half of the top and removed the gold tissue paper. I remembered thinking it was odd there was tissue paper in a box, but I just continued opening the present. I gently placed the tissue paper to the side of the box and saw pictures. They were pictures.. Of me?
I fanned the photos out on the bar and chunked the box to the floor. They were all photos of me. One was of me yesterday walking my dog. One was of me getting into my car for work. One was me a couple years ago when I lived in another state.. My stomach dropped as my heart rate increased. My pulse could be felt in my ears, and my palms became sweaty. I froze as my phone began to ring. The number was unfamiliar to me, so I ignored it. I called my husband, but he was busy with work, so I left a voicemail. I called in sick for work after that and just sat in the living room floor with the photos fanned out. There was no writing. No signs of who it was from. Parents said they hadn’t sent me anything. No one from work had either after texting them too. The photos were blurry as if they were taken quickly. My stomach lurched again at the thought of who could possibly be watching me.
Suddenly, my dogs were barking at a knocking on the door. The peephole showed a man standing outside I didn’t recognize. I ran to my bedroom and grabbed my husband’s gun. I called the police and told them about the photos and the man at the door. They were on the way, so I tried hiding in the kitchen. However, he took it upon himself to break the screen door and then began beating on the wooden door. He screamed, “What’s wrong, Ann?! You didn’t like my present?!”
Chills ran down my spine as I realized who it was. “It’s you,” I breathed to myself. The dogs still barked loudly and snarled. He screamed, “I even remembered your favorite colors! I’ve loved you from a distance all this time!”
