POEM STARTER

Write a series of five Haiku set at the same event, exploring the five senses: sight, smell, sound, touch, taste.

A Haiku is a form of Japanese poetry, consisting of three lines that generally do not rhyme, with a syllabic structure of 5-7-5.

Sight Sound

Sight

Cherry blossoms fall,

Soft petals kiss the still pond—

Spring’s gentle embrace.

Sound

Whispering pines hum,

A distant owl calls at dusk—

Nature’s lullaby.

Taste

Bitter green tea sips,

Lingering warmth on the tongue—

Zen in every drop.

Touch

Silk kimono glides,

Cool breeze against warm skin—

Sensual delight.

Smell

Sweet plum incense burns,

Fragrant trails in temple air—

Memory’s perfume.
