COMPETITION PROMPT

Write a poem in ‘revorto’ form.

A reverto poem uses couplets that alternate between one highly poetic and one very unpoetic line. The form is meant to jar the reader from a sense of poetic beauty to something other.

Rose Colored Glasses

On, and my knight slays opponents in an epic battle of justice and blood, his swift motions blurred

Off, and it’s my puppy barking at a bird

On, and I can almost hear the seagulls, smell the salt, as I gaze out at my ocean-front view

Off, and I guess a parking lot’ll have to do

On, and an orchestra appears in my living room, playing a song so sweet I get an earache

Off, and it’s my timer ringing—shit, I forgot about the cake!

On, and I’m a skilled pastry maker, crafting a masterpiece from flour and a baking pan

Off, and I’m wondering how the hell I managed to get icing on the ceiling fan

On, and you breeze through the front door, throw your computer bag to the side, and kiss me gently before I can even say happy birthday

Off, and you’re kissing me the exact same way

I taste thank you on your lips

They align perfectly with mine, like an eclipse

It’s enough to make me tipsy

I push my glasses away to see more clearly

With them on, my world is turned enchanting, poetic, like I’m dreaming

But with them off, I’m home, and there’s no better feeling
