POEM STARTER
Submitted by Peyton Headrick
Write a Haiku expressing the paradox of trust, being capable of great beauty and great harm.
How will you use this very short poetic form to portray such a concept?
Reflection Of The Stars
Throw Your Reflection to the Stars
Throw your reflection to the stars.
Your looks are my prison—my awareness lays behind your bars.
Praises to the laws, let there be flaws,
Contradictions in your behavior.
I’m nothing more than a favor,
Given because I saw your flavor.
I mean, I did a lot of waiting—
No hand in marriage, but my desires pulsating.
On my knees, sore as can be, my hope feigning.
Flashing lights, adrenaline high—
Christians getting their faith tested to be shining.
The magic hour, refining false words of being divine,
With haughty eyes.
What happened to their final destination?
Oh, they lose it in sight of hollow light.
I’m putting on my chains to seem allure.
Commandments of my life—the casualty of being bored.
Open your eyes, set it on the fire to become adored.
Wire on my life—I thought I was the one at war.
I’m Achilles without a heel—retire this year.
Humility is lost when the fear of death no longer pierces here.
Looking at you, like this is really what you wanted—
Me, to no longer feel fear.
Why do you care anyway?
Oh, I forgot—I’m the one with the spear.
Throw your reflection to the stars.
Your looks are my prison—my awareness lays behind your bars.
Praises to the laws, let there be flaws,
Contradictions in your behavior.
I’m nothing more than a favor,
Given because I saw your flavor.
When the moon is out, the flashing lights go bright.
Hollow as the night, your eyes still shine.
I can see the red in your eyes—ready to take the line,
Standing there without a care in the world.
I’m ready to risk it all tonight for you to enter my world.
Breaking me down to my purest form—
You’re how I’m gonna see the underworld.
Maybe we should let it all go,
And search for something deeper in our cores.
I hit our common spot at the bar, take a seat.
I’m with another woman—eyes looking at me like I’m a cheat.
You see, I always loved looking into the mirror,
But I love the sweets.
But tonight, I got more of a trick, not a treat.
I was walking—I got conned, the man was full of deceit.
This life was never my game,
Even though I caused so many fights in the street.
She loved my company, but I was always in the backseat.
You compete at my level, but you were never elite.
