My Little Davey
Dave was in the back of his dad’s car. He kept playing with his fingers and scratching his head. He could not sit still as he was too anxious and his dad Mike knew this from quickly looking at the rear view mirror. “Dave, buddy,” Mike said, being loud enough to make sure that his son heard him. Dave looked up and saw Mike looking at him through the rear view mirror. “Do you wanna know something?” Mike asked. “What, dad? What do you want me to know?” Dave asked while scratching his head and looking around, nervously and curiously. “Well, when I was younger, me and my dad would always drive together. When we were on our drives, we always did two things: Listen to some Metallica and play a game of I Spy,” Mike said, sounding quite nostalgic. “I was thinking that we should play it together. A nice thing to do as a father and son on the road. Right, Dave?,” Mike asked while smiling, looking back at his son through the rear view mirror. Mike started to slowly frown with his eyebrows curled up in concern as he saw Dave still looking down while rubbing against his arms and looking at the side view mirror, feeling pretty lost. “Look, Dave. I just want to let you know that I-Oh, hey! Look, what I spy! I spy with my little eye that we’re here! That didn’t take so long, now, did it?” asked Mike in a very upbeat way. Dave turned his head to look at Mike, trying to smile. That is, until Dave continued to look at the side view mirror which showed a grand hospital and a few cars spread throughout the hospital’s parking lot. Dave looked even sadder. Mike stopped smiling, looked down while holding onto the steering wheel, and took a deep breath. “Okay. Son, look. If I’m being honest, I know that things have not been exactly….” Mike says as he goes through a bag that he was wearing, getting out a shiny, pearl necklace. Mike played around with the necklace, moving it with his hand, and stared at it. “Um…..” Mike says as he grasps onto the pearl necklace firmly and looks around uncomfortably. “I know that, uh, things have not been as awesome sauce as we want them to be,”Mike says as he looks very flustered, begrudgingly puts away the pearl necklace. Mike then gets out an opened-up letter. Mike reads what is written on the letter. “Dear Mike and my little Davey, as you both know, I have been suffering from liver cancer for the past few years, and in those few years, I have been trying to fight it. Just as hard if not somehow even more so than your wife who has unfortunately passed away for what has now been a year and a half. May God bless her soul just as much as mine since I am probably gonna go up there as well. As I thought I was successful in my battle with liver cancer, but I guess I actually, ultimately have lost. I have been much more itchy, nauseous, thin, tired, frustrated, and worse of all: I look like an uglier Moe Szylack. I don’t think I have the most time left, and so, all I want from you and my little Davey is to come over to the hospital I’m at and just hang out. You know, just having another damn fine day before I go. I hope you and my little Davey could come whenever you guys want to or when you guys are free enough. Sincerely with love, Jimmy.” There was suddenly a tear stain on the paper and it was getting bigger on the side which it was on. Mike closed the letter and decided to put it away as he wiped tears off of his reddened face. Mike then zipped up his bag and put it back down under his seat. “Did you read it, Dad?” asked Dave. “Yeah. Yeah, yeah, I read it. I read the thing,” Mike said as he tried to calm down and not sound so choked up. “But, I mean, he wants to see us, right? He wants us to have fun, a-a-and you know, this is where things can still be good, not really great, but still good, y’know?” Mike said. “Dad, can we just go into the hospital, be with grandpa for a while, and then just go so this won’t suck as much,” said Dave very abruptly as he crossed his arms. “Alright. I guess we shouldn’t waste so much time in the car. Let’s go, Dave,” said Mike as he was getting out of the car. Mike and Dave walked over to the hospital together and continued to talk. “Dave, I know that you are upset that Grandpa’s been pretty sick and that he may pass on, but we should try to think about how we are still going to have a great day with grandpa. Nothing is going to change that,” Mike said as he puts his hand over his son’s shoulder, trying to reassure him that it’s not all that bad. “Yeah, that’s true, but what’s not going to change is that grandpa is gonna die,” Dave says as he looks down with his hands in his pockets. “Well, yeah, that’s true, but what’s not going to change is that grandpa is going to be when he sees me and you. That’s for sure!” Mike says as he goes through Dave’s hair in a playful way. Mike and Dave get into the hospital and go up to the women in the front office. “Heya miss, how are you?” Mike says as he leans against the wall. “Good. Do you have an appointment or do you need to see someone?” The woman says as she types on the computer while taking a sip of their coffee. Well, uh, no. No, we-we don’t have an appointment. We don’t need to be checked on. We’re fine. But, um, sadly, my former wife’s dad is currently here at your hospital as he has been suffering from liver cancer. He wanted to know if we were willing to see him again, which we totally are, and we just wanted to know if we can see him right now,” Mark said. “Yes, you can, as it seems that he doesn’t have anything today in his schedule. So you’re good,” the woman says as she continues to type and drink her coffee. “That’s great. But do you know where his room is, though?” Mike asks. “Just take two lefts, then a right, then go straight, then a right turn into his room. Okay?” the woman says as she continues typing while looking up at the man seriously. “Okay. Okay. Anyways, thank you, ma’am. Hope you have a nice rest of your day,” Mike says as he and Dave go to where Jimmy was. As Dave and Mike walk together, Dave couldn’t help but dwell on what was happening to his grandpa. Dave didn’t know whether or not this was going to be the last time he would see his grandpa or if something bad was going to happen today that could make it his grandpa’s last or something like that. These thoughts made Dave feel mortified over what could happen today. As Dave kept his hands in his pockets, still looking down as he walked, Mike smiled and whistled to himself. All Mike wanted to think about was what he wanted to do Jimmy. How today was going to be a fantastic day with great opportunities for fun, new memories, and new things to know. Dave and Mike found Jimmy’s room and got inside. They both saw Jimmy, lying in his bed and connected to a filled, hanging IV. “Hey, my little Davey! Mike! How the hell are you guys doing? Spectacular, I hope!” Shouted Jimmy as loudly as he possibly could. “We are! And we are very happy to see you. Right, Dave, my dude?!” Mike happily shouted as he wrapped his arm around Dave and gave him a light noogie. “Uh, yep. We’re just so thrilled seeing you,” Dave says as he awkwardly chuckles and gets noogied. “So, guys,” shouts Jimmy as he claps his hands and rubs them together, “what do y’all wanna do first?! Do you guys wanna watch a football game that’s going to air in a bit?” asks Jimmy. “There’s also this ad for this pet food company that Steve Buscemi’s in. It’s going to air during this game,”said Jimmy. “Oh, well, in that case, we are totes going to watch this!” Mike yells out, excitedly. Mike and Jimmy were clearly eager to talk to each other. As they were catching up, Dave just stood there. Standing there while worrying about what could happen. Mike, Jimmy, and Dave were watching the game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. Mike and Jimmy (really Mike) were yelling until their lungs collapsed as they cheered for the Bears whenever there was a good touchdown or kick-off, and got peeved whenever the Packers did well. Dave did not really say much, but he tried to have fun watching the game with them whenever he thought he could. The Bears won, which made Jimmy and Mike overjoyed. Jimmy and Mike kept making each other laugh and smile. “Well, it sucks seeing that this day now has to end,” Mike says as he hugs Jimmy and pats him on the back. I know. Hey Mikey, can I talk with Dave privately?” Asked Jimmy. Mike nodded, and tried to get Dave’s attention. Dave came over to Jimmy’s bed when Mike left the room. “What’s up, kiddo?,” asked Jimmy. “Nothin’ that much right now, but I’m doing decently. Why’d ya ask?” asked Jimmy “Well, I mean, you’re my grandson, so I don’t know why I wouldn’t ask. That, and I noticed that you seem to be more nervous and quiet than usual. I just wanna know that you’re okay,” said Jimmy. “Look, if you’re worried that I’m going to randomly die right now, or that things are going to be way worse, don’t. Because I’m an old man. I know that, even if I was ill or not, I would still end up dead. But just because I will die from being old and having strong liver cancer, doesn’t mean that I am going to waste my time worrying about it or that I’m just not going to stop being happy. And you wanna know why?” asked Jimmy with his finger pointed at Dave. Why don’t you?” asked Dave while he itched his neck. “I don’t because I know I don’t have to. Just because I know there are bad things, doesn’t mean I have to let it get the better of me. It’s always a choice to feel suffering, not pain,” said Jimmy with his hands on Dave’s shoulders. “It’s all a choice that you have control over. You don’t have to let this bother you so much, that you become this very negative person. You don’t want that. I know that what you really want is for people to see the strong, bright, driven, and kind boy you are. My little Davey,” Jimmy says as he lovingly hugs Dave and sheds tears from his eyes. Dave lets go of his grandpa and walks out of the room. Jimmy yells at Dave before he can go. “Hey! Don’t ever forget that you’re my little Davey! You always were and you always will!” Shouts Jimmy. “I know, grandpa,” Dave said as he turned around, genuinely, actually smiling. “I know,” says Dave as he walks out of the room, closing the door behind him. Dave and Mike walked together through the halls of the hospital, looking more happy. “Ah, my little Davey, what a good kiiiiiiiddddddd……..” Jimmy says as he closed his eyes and just lied there.
