Rewind
He gasped, deep and loud, as his mind and body adjusted to the sudden change. He was lying on the hard ground, rocks digging into his back, staring up at cloudless sky in confusion. How did he get here?
He remembered flashes and shouting but nothing specific, and he was the only person around in what he realised was a meadow. Sitting up slowly, he looked around to see nothing but green for miles. How did he get here?
He grew more confused until he spotted the door. The door was unattached and stood upright a few meters away from him. Aside from the fact it was out of place, there was nothing remarkable about it. Still, interest piqued, he stood and approached it. With a click, he turned the door knob and opened it.
Lights and shouting suddenly filled his senses - emergency vehicles surrounded a house that was ablaze while workers tried to stop it. Near him, a group of people in pyjamas were screaming, fighting the ones holding them back as they reached for the burning home.
“Turner!” A new voice shouted before someone shook his shoulder roughly. He turned in shock to see a man he vaguely recognised. “Turner, what the hell are you doing? We need help here!”
Nodding mutely, ‘Turner’ began unconsciously doing support tasks that he had no idea how to do but did anyway, like his muscle memory was guiding him through the routines he couldn’t remember. It was a surreal experience before the sharp scream from inside the house brought his mind to a halt. It felt like time had slowed down as he looked and saw the image of a young girl in the house, clutching tightly to a toy bear, terrified.
He moved on instinct and was a few steps away from the remains of the front door when he was halted.
“Turner, what are you doing?” The man from before shouted in panic.
“There’s someone in there!” He responded but the voice didn’t sound right, like he was listening to a recording of himself.
“What are you talking about, there’s no one in-“ another scream echoed out of the house and Turner ripped himself away and threw himself inside. The flames grew more intense but he couldn’t see the girl. He shouted but got no response as the heat continued to grow.
A creak sounded overhead and he looked up in time to see a beam breaking, crashing down towards him until-
