Morana - acceptance

“I’ve never met anyone quite like you before.” She teased, although I knew she meant it. All I could do was give her a small and meaningless smile.

“You should be grateful for that.” My seemingly ominous choice of words made the smile that had shone so brightly on her face falter. I didn’t mean to upset her. I just wanted her to know I’m not someone to be comfortable around.

She looked like she wanted to say something, but couldn’t get the words out. I tried breaking the silence but before I could she spoke.

“It’s a good thing.” She turned to look back at me, her voice quiet yet full of determination. It was like she wanted me to believe her. “I’m glad you’re different. Everyone else is boring and fairly rude.”

I don’t know how long I stared at her with an unwavering expression of disbelief. It must’ve been long enough for her to realize that I’ve never had anyone who thought so highly of me. No one wanted to think of me at all.

I stood up from the fallen tree stump we were both sat on. I scoffed and finally replied, “My kind of different is far from something good. It’s dangerous.” I knew that wouldn’t change her mind. We were on the same level of danger. “I want to help you, not bring you down with me.”

This was what I should’ve done in the beginning. Set boundaries. Not let her get too close. But when I looked back at her and saw the same persistence in her eyes I couldn’t help but want to stare into them forever.

As she got up and stood closer to me she spoke again, “There is no helping me. You of all people should know that.”

For the first time the trees and darkness that surrounded us didn’t seem so lonely. The silence when we wouldn’t say a word didn’t feel as deafening. It all felt peaceful, and a strange part of me wanted to stay like this forever.

How ironic. Me, the son of the Grim Reaper finding solace in a girl who was brought on earth only to cause destruction. Maybe what I’ve needed all this time was someone who could truly understand my insanity.

(Okay I just wanted to explain this little story and other ones I will write. I gave a little explanation in my bio but the word limit is very short. Mostly all of the short stories I’ll write are based on bigger story ideas I have. For example, this one is based on an idea I named “Morana”. There’s not much context behind these characters and this story yet but once I write more there will be. Bare with me I’m not very good yet lol)
