There For You

“I’ve learned you can’t trust anyone, And that friendship leads to pain; People you rely on drift away, Like when the ocean swallows the rain” I sat in silence for a bit, Watching his thoughtful face, He seemed so sure of everything That I didn’t know what to say “But what about people who love you?” I asked, And his gaze found its way to mine, “Surely there must be someone you know Who tells you that all the time.” He shrugged and leaned against the bench, Watchful eyes turned away, “It doesn’t seem to matter much, Because I always get betrayed.” “I care,” I said gently, And I saw him blink his eyes, I turned in hopes he wouldn’t see The rim of tears in mine “I know what it’s like to be left out, And to feel like no one cares, And you can choose to believe me or not, But I’ve definitely been right there. “You matter to me,” I went on again, “Maybe more than you will ever know, And I promise to always be there for you Just please don’t give up hope.” He turned again to stare at me, This time for a good long while, And I swear behind those saddened eyes I caught a tiny glimpse of a smile.
