The Scars of Our Hearts
The heart, Our hearts.
Beat of life, center of living.
Feelings start there, and end there.
And yet we want to guard them;
Our Hearts, the very thing that is both tremendously strong yet so weak it freights us.
So, some of us young lock them up refusing to let them free.
Some cage our heart when we are older.
After all the hurt, the pain, and the distress.
We hide our hearts and refuse to listen to them.
Even when they are screaming at us that we are messing out.
That they still have love to give to us and the ones around us that need that love.
Yet we sit there missing out, closed off….scared.
Scared of getting hurt, scared of being given more scars.
We forget to ask ‘what if?’
What if he is the one?
What if she really does want to be my friend?
What if I’m a really good artist?
We forget to tell ourselves,
That I can sing, and dance.
That I can write, and speak.
That I can love myself! Even when others won’t.
And then I can love others.
Our hearts tell us this they yell it at us.
But people tell us we can’t and our brains start to think we can’t.
And so this becomes our very core a part of us so big that we cage our hearts.
We hide our very being, because we become scared of the pain.
We forget that it’s part of learning.
We forget that it is okay to fail.
We forget that everyone is just trying to live.
We forget because of the hurtful words
Because of the painful breakup,
The failed test…We…Forget.
We forget that its The Scars of Out Hearts are what make us stronger.
The scars of our hearts are the experience we need to not hide away
But to do better.
