Butterfly
I lay there, my head sinking into my silk pillow and my eyes shut. The constant upbeat song of my alarm echos in my head as I stretch out my arms and prepare for the blinding light of the sun. I want to go back to sleep. I slowly roll out of bed onto the clean floor of my room and eventually get up. My morning routine is always the same, get up, eat breakfast, go to school, there’s nothing special about it. I slump down the long, wooden stairs and head to our kitchen.
“Good morning honey, did you sleep well?”, called the cheerful voice of my mum.
“Yup”, I reply. I was lying, I’m good at that. I haven’t slept well since grandma died. I make my way to the pantry and gently place two pieces of white bread into the toaster. The frigid air of the fridge gives me chills as I reach for out for our tub of butter. The fresh smell of mum’s cleaning spray filled my nose as I placed the butter on the counter. I walked on over to check on my toast. Mum is drinking her morning coffee, I don’t know how she can be so energised in the mornings.
Then suddenly, I hear a shuffle. Not like the sound the leaves make in the wind, it was less calming, almost a banging noise. I sharply turn my head. The tub of butter I had placed on the counter had now ever so slightly moved. I tell myself that I’m tired, just imagining things. I go back to getting my toast from the toaster.
Then it happened again. My reflexes were better this time, and I could see that the butter had shuffled about 4 inches to the left. I rubbed my eyes in shock.
“Did you see that?”, I ask my mum. Her face is just as concerned as mine.
“I think I did. The butter, did you do something to it? This is probably another one of your stupid pranks”, she responds. I don’t think she’s forgave me for the rabbit incident just yet.
I cautiously wander over to the tub of butter. Letting my curiosity get the better of me, I place my small hands on the plastic blue lid. Slowly, I lifted it. Before my eyes something flew out of the tub. My eyes scan the room, but this butter thing is no where to be seen. Fully removing the lid from the tub, I notice that it’s completely empty.
“The butter, it just flew away!”, shouted my mum. I was just as confused as her. I checked my watch.
“I’m going to be late for school! I better leave now.”, I said with a shocked tone in my voice.
That was the last we ever saw of this flying butter.
