STORY STARTER

In a world where the ocean is considered a terrifying, prohibited place, describe your character’s first experience of going in the sea.

Why do they have to, and how do they feel about it?

Salty, Icey and relentless

I look around the beach to make sure no one is watching me, the rules states no one is allowed to go into vast ocean, we're only allowed in the pools and rivers. But I'm not content swimming in shallow pools or floating down rives, I want to dive into the water, get tumbled over by waves no matter how terrifying people say it is. The waves are roaring, as if daring me to come forward. Theres no time like the present. First, I feel my feet touch the freezing cold water, then legs start to feel it too. I should have worn something more than just my t-shirt and shorts. But still, I try to run forward. The water was slowing me down, the waves crashing against me relentlessly to push me back. A wave as tall as me swallows me whole, forcing me to fall down onto my backside. My eyes start stinging and before I could rub my eyes another wave washes over me, salty sea water forcing its way down my throat. I gagged immediately, the salty taste lingering in my mouth. Quickly, I stood up to avoid swallowing more sea water, now the breeze was cold and chilly making the water seem warm in comparison. The sun is almost set, I need to get back or else I might really freeze like a popsicle.

I stumbled back onto the sand, my legs feeling a bit like jelly. Despite my not so ideal time, I feel even more drawn to water, to go further perhaps beyond the waves...
