WRITING OBSTACLE

Submitted by Maranda Quinn

Show a powerful emotion – love, grief, rage - in a quiet, everyday moment.

Instead of writing a dramatic and drawn out scene, think about how subtle actions and sensory details can carry the weight of the feeling.

missing in aisle 5

"Olivia. Did you steal the shopping list again?"

The shopping list has gone missing from Darcy's pocket, again, and there's only one person who keeps trying to take it from her.

She looks towards Olivia, who is smiling mischeviously, "No..."

Darcy takes on a fake tone of condescension, trying to hold back her grin, "Ah, is that a lie? Because I can't seem to find it anywhere..."

She lunges at Olivia, spotting the corner of a post-it hidden in the back pocket of her jeans. Darcy plucks it out, and Olivia exclaims, "Oh my goodness! You've just assaulted me!" She puts the back of her hand to her forehead, feigning being offended, "Officer, yes, there's a woman in aisle 5 attempting to harass me, she's 5 foot 6 and very beautiful-"

Darcy pushes the cart past her, "Yes, yes, you're very wounded, now I fear we must finish our shopping for tonight. Unless you don't want to have our at home movie date?"

"Yes, sir."

The two continue down the aisle, searching for the chocolate syrup to top off their ice cream, of which they've purchased far too much than is reasonable. But it's worth it to be able to eat it together until they're sick, inevitably forcing Olivia to stay at Darcy's place, where they can watch movies until the sun rises.

Of course, Olivia would've stayed anyway. But they were both happy for the excuse to spend just a bit more time with each other.
