Engine Parts
Ryan frantically rummaged through the rusted husk of the bus. Watching him gut the desiccated engine block for parts was somewhat akin to watching a crazed rat rummage through bin bags in search of its next, extremely disappointing, meal. After about 10 minutes of flinging scrap metal into the trees and chittering under his breath, he pulled his gaunt head from the gaping hole where the engine once was and violently slammed down the bonnet. He chuntered something again that was completely drowned out by the horrible screech and crash of metal fighting metal. With a final, quite horrendous screech, the bonnet detached from the bus and clattered onto the floor below.
"Never 'owt good in these bloody things no more!" He began to kick the bumper with his weathered boots. "I tell ya I'll 'av this bloody bus I tell ya!"
While watching Ryan attack a inanimate hunk of metal and lose was the closest I got these days to a good movie, I knew I had to step in. "Ryan mate, I know our quest to find parts hasn't been exactly fruitful so far, but is causing an absolute racket and attracting Rad-Heads really worth it?"
Ryan threw me an enraged look, and for a moment I thought perhaps I was about to be on the receiving end of a failed kick, but instead he stopped, his beady eyes flicking between me and the floor. "Yeah yeah, let's jus'... let's jus' crack on shall we eh?" He gave the floor one last frustrated kick, causing a small eruption of dirt, before grabbing his pack and slinging it over his shoulder.
"We'll find something mate. We have to." Smiling weakly, I gave him a small pat on the arm. He ran his hands down his face and through his wispy beard, then gave me a sombre nod.
We decided to give the bus one last check, and amongst the rotted chairs and shattered glass we found nothing. After a quick dust off, we began back down the overgrown track.
In the distance, buried in the tree's and overgrowth, I noticed the distinctive glow of 2 irradiated eyes. "Ryan." I clasped my hand on his shoulder. He turned, and saw my gaze locked into the distance.
"Run."
