Mixed Emotions
"KIDS!" Courtney yelled from downstairs. Her children were still in bed and they needed to get up and ready soon if they wanted to make it to Benton, Arkansas in time for the family reunion.
"Mom, we're ready. No need to yell," David, the oldest of three children, came down the stairs rubbing his eyes. He was seventeen and not thrilled about about having to go to the reunion. "Why do I have to go? Dad isn't going to be there."
"That's because your father couldn't get time off from work, but he said he'll try to make it there before the reunion weekend is over," Courtney said.
"Still isn't fair I have to be forced to go," David sat on the couch and crossed his arms.
"David! Don't just sit there. Help me get your brother and sister ready. I have to finish packing the car."
"Fine," David threw his arms up in the air and walked back upstairs. Tracey and Jonathan were still lying in bed when David reached their rooms. "Guys, mom said for the two of you to get up. Now."
"Do we have to?" Jonathan whined. "I don't like these reunions." He was only seven, but didn't enjoy family gatherings.
"Yes, you have to. I don't like them any more than you do, and I'm still going."
Jonathan grumbled under his breath and walked to the bedroom. David made his way to his sister's room. She was only a year younger than Jonathan, but had a better attitude about today than any of her brothers. David was shocked to see his sister was ready for the day.
"I know you probably hear what I said to Jonathan, but I see you already got ready on your own." David was shocked by how independent his sister acted at only six.
"I've been waiting all week for this reunion. I'm going to go see mom downstairs," she said running to meet their mother at the car.
David walked back to Jonathan's room, waiting for his brother to be finished so they could get this weekend over with.
