Just Hanging Around

It's hard to be inconspicuous when you're hanging upside down. But once again Jerry found himself in a predicament. It seemed to happen to him daily. Here he was, hanging upside down.

Jerry could not quite recall how this had occurred. He just came to and immediately sensed something was wrong. Sure enough, his world was upside down.

He tried to right himself up, pulling his head towards his feet, hoping to grab on by stretching out his arms. They felt restricted by some kind of webbing.

He swung back down, his body swaying back and forward from the momentum.

At least his feet felt secure to whatever he was attached to. While he hung there, he wondered how he would escape his predicament.

He became aware of some voices, heading in his general direction. Jerry started to panic.

"Oh no, no no no." He thought. "Please don't see me."

"Okay, calm down, Jerry. Just act inconspicuous. Pretend this is a perfectly natural occurrence, and maybe they won't notice. "

Jerry closed his eyes and just hung there as he heard the people approach. Their footsteps echoed louder as they approached until, they came to a stop, seemingly right in front of him.

"Oh god no!" Jerry thought.

They started whispering and then a thundering tapping sound erupted around him.

Panicking, he squeezed his eyes even tighter, wrapping his arms around his body with fear.

The tapping sound fading, he opened one eye slightly to see them staring at him.

"Damnit!" he exclaimed out loud. Both eyes open now, he could see them laughing and pointing at him. He frantically waved an arm at them, causing his body to start swinging again.

"Move along! Nothing to see here!" he yelled out at them.

They pointed their devices at him and lights started flashing at him. Bright lights stinging his eyes.

"Aaargh! My eyes!" Jerry screamed, "What are you doing? Why won't you go get some help?"

The people walked away smiling.

"What on earth?" Jerry yelled. "I'm hanging upside down here, why won't you get help!"

"Jerry! JERRY!"

The voice came from his left, startling him. He turned his head to his left, to see who was there.

"Steve! Oh, am I relieved to see you. Wait, you're upside down too?"

"Jerry, you're a fucking bat! We are all bats. This is what we do!"

Jerry stared at Steve for a minute, before everything started to make sense.

"Oh." Jerry said sheepishly, "Ohhh.. right. I... um.. I forgot."

"Yes Jerry, you always forget. Now can you just hang there and go to bloody sleep? You're waking everyone up." Steve said impatiently.

"Sure thing Steve, sorry Steve!"

Steve wrapped his wings around his body and tried to go back to sleep, muttering under his breath.

"Every damn day for a month, Jerry. We've been in the zoo for a month and every damn day you forget you are a bat in a zoo. What the hell?"

Jerry thought about apologising again but figured that might just upset Steve even more. He wrapped his wings around his body and closed his eyes.

Sighing contently, Jerry went to sleep.
