When persecution comes And the burning threat of terror stings

When captor treads And tramples mortal source where life springs

When day dusks And reigns the gift that darkness brings

When shackle keeps And wall to wall each echo rings

I know why the caged bird sings.

Then salvation comes And the terror of transgression stings

Then captor falls And on knees learns the source from where life springs

Then darkness flees And the household to new life baptism brings

Then the gospel keeps And glory to glory each freedom rings

I know why the caged bird sings. It sings to set the captor free.
