After That Moment

“Tell me something,” she asked them bitterly, her face twisted into a grimace as she looked down upon those that had taken her in. “Tell me why, when all I have ever done is try to help, you all turn on me when you find out that my fate is out of your control?” They were silent. “Tell me!” she screamed out brokenly, and took grim pleasure when they flinched back. “You’re fate is to destroy us all,” Mafalia hissed out, stepping to the front of the group. She was trying to be strong for the rest of them. For once, it was a facade. “And did I choose that?” Amalie shot back, receiving only a low growl. Around her, the others still stood unmoving, watching with pursed lips and breaking hearts. “The answer is no,” she snapped. “If I had any idea what I was supposed to do, then I would have told you all much sooner. In Paradise’s good name... why don’t any of you believe me?” Silence yet again. “Is it because I look different? Talk different? Is it because I’ve just *ruined* you all? Or is it because you’re just a bunch of hypocritical, power-hungry fools?” “We’re not power-hungry,” Mafalia snapped back, which Amalie had to scoff at. “You’re one to talk.” Within seconds, she was pinned against a wall, sharp claws restraining her wrists. “Say that again,” the demon spat. “I *dare* you.” Amalie felt a twinge of fear spike within her heart, but she would never have spoken of it. Nor did she. She just stomped her foot down hard on top of Mafalia’s to get her to loosen her grip before quickly side-stepping her and walking swiftly towards the double doors. “When you look for where I am, I won’t be there.” And with that, she was gone. Over the next few days, that was proven all too much. Amalie’s pendant turned up on the front steps, tossed down carelessly so that no OPAL recruit could track her. At her apartment, everything had been sealed away neatly, as one might do if they were going on a long trip, but both her car and bike remained. In OPAL’s weaponry, her sword was gone. When a week passed with no word from her, everyone started to worry far more than they had been. Search parties were sent out, posters were put up, and frequencies of all sorts of planetary communications were tapped into to try to find the missing savior. But it was as if she had just... vanished. Most of the recruits had quickly realized their mistakes after Amalie had left. For some, it took a few weeks. But when she was gone for two months, that’s when Mafalia finally snapped. “It’s not fair!” she shouted in the bedroom of her own apartment, throwing a dagger so hard at the wall that it split the wood. “They’re being completely unreasonable! She’s a *destroyer*, not a savior! They’ve all gone mad!” Another blade thrown, this time shredding a poster on her wall. Her landlord would not be happy about the property damage, but she could care less. She’d done worse, after all. Her Norvaryan seeing-flower trembled in its pot on her desk when Mafalia pounded her fist down next to it. “It’s just not fair!” The problem was that she knew it was. She knew that this day would come, deep down in her heart. She just never wanted to face it. But she had to. Glancing over at her mirror, she hated what looked back. She was so ghastly, her hair a mess from running her fingers through it and her her eye bags an ugly purple from far too many sleepless nights of waiting for an updated report. When she slammed her fist into the glass out of fury and helplessness, it shattered around her. As the shards fell, she fell with them, and her body wracked with heavy sobs. Only then did she truly understand that she was the reason why the girl she had loved so fiercely but so silently was most likely never coming back. And there was nothing she could do to fix it.

When The Rain Fell

The setting sun had always been such a peaceful sight. It marked the end of a long day of troubles, and the silent promise of a tomorrow. There was no such promise now as the last drops of light dripped away from the edge of the earth. With this new darkness, the only promise whispered was that of spilled blood. In hindsight, they should’ve known what horrors they would eventually face, now that the demon king and his horde had been invited back to the living world. They should have prepared more, slept more, done something more than what they did do. Amalie knew better. There was nothing more they could’ve done. Now, they must pay the price of escaping one war by facing another. The ugly beast, writhing with shadows and tar, the product of an unholy and otherworldly realm, was not what they wished it to be. An army was easier to fight. A whole land full of living monstrous creatures was something they could face. This was different. This wasn’t supposed to be something that any soul should have to challenge. It reared its huge bony head back and shrieked, piercing the air and instilling an ancient fear into the hearts of all that heard its call. Its towering legs stabbed into the soil, and in that moment, the world stood still. But only for that moment. Within the next, battle cries roared up from those who promised to protect this universe. They charged the beast on wing and foot and wheel, doing their best to look brave. Their appearance was all they could control now. The rest was truly up to fate. Yet, it was clear that fate never favored the brave. Only an hour after, half of their forces were reduced to ash. Blood stained the torn ground, fire rose from the buildings of the city behind them, and those who survived were either pushing so hard through the pain that they looked crazy or were crying. Crying out for the losses of their lovers, their siblings, their friends. Crying for the loss of their cause. And screaming because none of it could ever return. The beast, unaffected by the feeble attempts to harm it from such determined mortal souls, continued to wreak havoc. It did not belong. No part of it was natural, and that is why they had died. It’s breath alone was suffocating, it’s roar was terrifying, and it’s touch was toxic. The girl that had promised these people that she knew what she was doing was cut to her very core. She had lied. The smoke billowed and screams rang out and the stench of death filled her lungs. Her wounds throbbed and her power only served to drain her. Her clothes were in tatters, her sword lay in pieces on the ground, and her allies had been all but lost. She would not fulfill the grand fate she had found, and even if she did, it would be all for naught. She knew that this was the price to pay for her arrogance. And it was then that the rain fell. As the sky was weeping with her.

It was often that he looked back on his mistakes. His wrongdoings. How could you not when you were surrounded by them? When your teammates, colleagues, and minions were all just as flawed as you? He wasn’t a corrupt being, as so many thought he was. He was just... desperate. Desperate for change, for hope, and for a home. He never intended to start a war. This much he knew as he kneeled before his king, the world around him burning. He only wanted his family back. He only wanted to do his people justice. He should’ve known that justice is not found within bloodshed, and that the dead cannot return. He knew now though. All too late. As those he had learned to care for abandoned him, leaving him to face judgement alone. Betrayal stung deeper than any wound or scar he now carried upon his skin, and such betrayal would typically be a spark. But now, it just shattered his very soul. The knowledge of a lack of morals when such was all that was needed does that to a person. And it is now that he has lost. “Your grace-“ he began, but was silenced by the king’s raised hand. He thought to himself, only for a moment, of how such a monstrous man could never truly fit into the inherited title of ‘king’. Though, he spoke not a word of such a thought, as it alone was treason. “Do you believe me to be a fool, Luci?” the king asked, and he quickly answered. “N-no sir. Not at all.” “I do believe you might be lying to me,” the king continued, stepping up from his throne and descending the stairs, creeping closer and closer to him, “as your generals have all but fled the land. Your army is in shambles, your reign finished, yet you still attempt to hinder the completion of my plans and cover it up with distraction after distraction as if I would not see behind such a feeble ruse. So I shall ask you again. Do you believe me to be a fool?” This time, he held his tongue. Whatever he said next would seal his fate permanently. “I take silence as an answer too, you know,” the king said silkily, laying a gentle hand on Luci’s shoulder. That was when the fine thread of control that was held within him snapped, and he spoke the truth. “I do, in fact, believe you to be a fool. Your father never crowned you king, but you still claim yourself to be one. Your land has long since been destroyed because of a war you never chose to stop, and now you’ve brought such a war here just because of a petty feud you have with a group of powerful children that have outwitted you time and time again. You’ve summoned a virtually indestructible entity, and for what? To try and dish out payback? You have no true fight other than the fight within yourself, and it is pitiful that you ever thought yourself to be a kind and just ruler.” An anger burned behind his eyes now. He was never supposed to try and fight for a long-lost cause. He was never supposed to invite this menace into his domain, nor was he supposed to let his crown be taken. He never planned on attacking those who were just trying to make a better life for themselves than the ones they’d lost. He didn’t truly want revenge. It was mostly out of misguidance that he wished his life returned. He didn’t truly want a war. Not even now. He never wanted to be the villain. But now, this monster before him had resurrected a war, a battle long finished, and meticulously denied mercy to all but one. They, in their fight so long ago, had brought the war to him. This is why he brought this pseudo-king back from what was supposed to be his grave. Now, he knew he was no exception to the lack of mercy. He had played his part in the war, and as the silver dagger clutched within the king’s cruel hand pierced his heart, he could only hope that such a war would end swiftly. For now, he breathed his final breath, glad to have fought against the true evil, even if it was just within a moment of defiance. And for now, returned to his people, in the only way he possibly could.
