Charlotte brought a game called backgammon. The board itself, a leather case with stripes down the middle, metal buckles, was fancier than the old folding chess board and bag of plastic chessmen that Jen had brought, along with the checkers in the broken box.
Inside the box were neat rows of stacked heavy discs, white and brown, and matching dice with dice shakers, and an incomprehensible die that turned out to be for betting.
Charlotte taught her how to set up the board, in twos and fives and threes, mirror image of the other side. Jen wanted to be white but Charlotte chose white so she had to be brown.
