I am a high school student trying to pursue my dream of writing.
The doorbell rings, and there is a knock at the door. The paper is here. Let me catch you up. For the past couple months my best friend, Kaylee, has been working for the local newspaper creating the clues for all the crosswords. Every week we get a new paper, and that means a new crossword. I have never been fond of word games but when Kaylee started working at the local newspaper it kinda made me think about it. Every week when I get a new paper I always spend the day trying to solve the crossword puzzle. The words have been a bit weird lately. Ever since a new case emerged about some guy going on a killing spree and they have four the victims the exact same, the words would get weirder and weirder. I mean you can judge it for yourself. This past weeks words were, blood, trash bag, lake, car, and weapon. I mean that sounds strange to me.
A week passes. The doorbell rings. The paper is here.
“Cate! Door!”, my mom yelled from the kitchen. I knew when she said that what day it was. The day the paper came. When I opened the door there was a small envelope with my name on it tucked under the paper. “Wonder what this is.”, I said as I closed the door behind me going back into the house. As I went up to my room I opened the envelope and read it to myself. “Hey Cate, this is Kaylee. I would of texted you but someone could of got ahold of my message if I did. Anyways though, make sure you do the crossword today. Something special is in it today. You know how the words have been strange lately? I did that on purpose. The guys here have been taking about the local case emerging in town. I know everything. I’m trying to warn you because I think the killer is someone in here, and I think you and me both are in danger and are their next targets. With love, Kaylee.”, I read. It’s like a cold breeze blew through my room as I put the letter down.
A week passes. No newspaper. Another week passes. No newspaper. A month passes. The doorbell rings. This time not for the right reason.
My mom opens the door as the police stands there. “Can I help you officer?”, my mom says. “Is Cate your daughter ma’am?”, the officer asks. “Yes sir, is she in trouble?”, my mom questions. “Cate is no longer with us. She was found in her car in a trash bag at the lake.”, the officer says.
As the wind howled around me I just think about how much longer I have. My mother always said that you would have to face extreme obstacles in life, but she never said anything about this. Every step I take up this mountain I feel like I am getting farther from the top less than closer. I never liked hiking or climbing up things like this but my fiancé begged me to do this with him. “How are you doing honey?”,my fiancé, Ben, yells. “If it wasn’t 20 below I would be doing a lot better.”, I said out of breath. Nothing could beat this view though. Even though I was freezing and my hands were numb, the sunset was so beautiful.
