Silver Tongued
I slide the bag across the table, the hooded figures
opposite of me peers inside.
“Where the hell did you find this?” The middle one asks.
I shrug and lean back in my chair. I watch as the middle figure reaches inside with gloved hands and takes out the necklace. They inspect it before showing the others. No doubt they are all having a telepathic conversation at the moment but that just makes it even funnier. I already know what it is, how it works, and who it belongs to. But I want to see if they know that too.
The figure to the left finally spoke, “We asked a question. Where did you find this?”
I move my hair from my face with one hand and take my dagger in the other. I gently slide my fingers down the tip before stabbing it into the table.
“It doesn’t matter where I found it. It matters that I’ve brought it to you when I could’ve every well kept it to myself.”
“Watch that silver tongue of yours before I rip it out of your throat.” The right figure says sharply.
It’s almost amusing to know that they think they’re more powerful than me. I can feel their power coiling around me. I can feel that they are all powerful telepaths. But I can also feel that the one on the right has a second gift. Silencing. The power to be able to take a person’s voice straight from their throat. And draw the truth from them if they please as well. I quite like my voice so I decided to take the threat very real.
I spread my hands, “It wasn’t that hard to take it to be honest. You of all people would understand that.” I point towards the middle figure. A close friend of my father. A person who clawed their way to power through tooth and claw alone.
“Enough games! Liam where did you get this? How did you know its location.” The right one said.
I wasn’t prepared enough to put my mental shields on and I felt their magic flow through my mind like a gentle breeze. The truth started to coax it way towards my mouth.
“I heard you talking about it in your last meeting. I went and used my abilities to sneak into the chamber and steal the amulet.” I say reluctantly, “I know what it is and how dangerous it is for the kingdom.”
All three of them are silent. What I’ve done is treasonous. They could kill me now. But I know how useful I could be for them. If I could steal from them, who says I can’t steal from the king. And that was excatly my plan.
The middle one sighs, “You test our patience Liam. We should kill you now.”
“Or,” I say thoughtfully, “I can give you helpful insight to the Royal palace. That can singlehandly turn the tide for the resistance.”
The hooded figures turn to look at each other, another silent discussion being held. Until finally they nod.
“You will have 1 week to infiltrate the Royal palace and get some intell. If we deem it worthy you will live.” The left one says.
“And if I don’t?” I ask.
The right one moves their head up slightly, just enough to see his grin, “Then we kill you.”
