How Do You Know?

Her breaths quickened as she listened to his words. Her heart pounded as he spoke. She didn’t want to hear his words anymore.

“I’m sorry, I don’t think we’re right for each other.” The words he said rung in her ear.

“Please don’t leave!” Her desperate gasps escaped her mouth and left her like he was to do.

“Marissa, I’m sorry. I have to go. It’s not you… It’s me.” He spoke. His words pierced her heart. She collapsed to the ground, letting him go. She could not speak, as when she did she only choked on her cries.

Hours past, and Marissa sat crying. She stayed in that very spot until a man came up to her around the hour of 2am.

“Are you alright, Miss?” He asked. She only looked up, her eyes puffy and red, her face wet and streaked with tears. He sat down next to her and smiled at her. “It’s okay, tell me what’s wrong.”

“After six years of nonstop loving each other, my fiancé broke up with me. We were to get married in just 3 days. Yet he ended it. And I know it’s my fault! I’ve just had so much stress over the wedding that I took it out on him. Multiple times.” She explained.

“If he really loved you, he wouldn’t have left over wedding stress.” He replied, looking more serious now. She sat and processed his words.

“You’re right.” She sighed, letting her head fall onto his shoulder. His hand moved to her head and gently stroked her hair.

“It’ll be alright. I promise, Marissa.” Said the man.

At those words, Marissa tensed.
