POEM STARTER

Submitted by Maranda Quinn

Write a poem which includes the motif of doors.

Whether open or closed, doors can be used to represent many different things.

The Hand That Holds The Knob

Not my best work, but I think it gets the point across. Lol.

There are unseen thresholds in our way,

Doors that open, doors that sway.

Some close so hard they shake the floor,

And leave us pounding on the door.

We bang with fists until they bleed,

Convinced that crossing is what we need.

But God sees more than we can know —

He shuts some doors to help us grow.

We may feel anger, a sense of loss,

Facing a threshold we don’t want to cross.

We can refuse – he gives us free will.

We can choose to hold onto the anger we feel.

It can be hard not to intervene —

Trusting a hand that remains unseen.

Perhaps we’re convinced that we’re all alone…

Crippled by fear of the dark unknown.

We may even fumble with Rusty tools,

Picking locks like desperate fools.

But in hindsight, we realize,

Opening locked doors isn’t wise.

In time, we start to understand,

The knob fits better in God‘s hand.

We’ll feel no anger, we’ll hold no grudge,

We’ll wink at the sky when a door won’t budge.

And when a door swings open wide,

We’ll walk with faith, not fear inside.

For even when we cannot see,

Our higher power holds the key.

Today, I won’t force what isn’t mine,

I’ll wait for God‘s clear, steady sign.

Picking locks is a part of my past.

I’ve tossed those rusty tools at last.

And when I feel a soft wind blow,

Causing a door to swing gently closed,

I will not kick or scream or sob,

I’ll trust the hand that holds the knob.
