STORY STARTER

Your main character starts seeing the same drone almost everywhere they go.

Write a suspenseful story inspired by this premise.

What Should I Do?

I started noticing it last week.

One night, when I was closing my window blinds, a drone was flying just outside my house on the street.

The next night, it was just hovering above the sidewalk.

I had wondered if it was a neighbour’s drone, and whether they were spying on their neighbours.

The evening after, the drone was hovering over our driveway.

I felt creeped out, but I shut the window blinds like usual and ignored it.

On the fourth night, it was above our front lawn. I gave it my middle finger before angrily shutting the blinds.

On the fifth night, it was right in front of the window. I could heard the wind buzzing.

Reckoning that giving the middle finger last time didn’t work to disuade the stalker, I filmed the drone and emailed a police detective that I happened to have the contact of. It came from a neighborhood break-in-and-enter investigation letter a month ago.

The next morning, I got a reply suggesting that I check with my neighbours. The dectective said I should ask if their kids had a drone to narrow down who the drone might be from.

Begrudgingly, I ignored it because I was too busy to do that during the day.

I went to work as usual, but out of the corner of my eye, I kept seeing the drone following me.

It was outside of my office. It followed behind my car.

I was angry. This was pure malicious stalking.

Complaining to my coworkers, one of them suggested that I break it.

So during our lunch break, him and I went to the company gym to borrow a dumbbell. Then we went outside to where the drone was, but it was too high up to reach.

Thanking the coworker, we went back into the office, where I emailed the detective again. I asked if I could break it and turn it in as evidence since it was stalking me the whole day.

By the time I got home, I shut all of my curtains in advance before it even got dark.

I didn’t even take out the garbage and recycling because I didn’t want to see that damn drone again.

That night, I heard the buzzing sound of the drone outside my bedroom window.

I brought up a hammer and a golf club and put it next to my bed before falling asleep to the buzzing sound of the drone outside.

Today was the seventh day and it was the weekend, so I decided not to go outside. What if the drone was outside waiting to ambush me?

I checked my email for a reply, and surely, the dectective had answered my question.

Unfortunately, the answer was no, but he reassured me that most drones these days didn’t use metal wings, so it shouldn’t be able to physically hurt me.

Despite that I was afraid to go outside and also afraid to open the curtains and see the drone right outside my window.

So I ordered my own drone online and had it delivered instantly. I was going to have it do the checking for me, and follow the stalker drone back to its owner’s house.

Because I was renting this small bungalow, I couldn’t install security cameras without the landlord’s permission.

The delivery man arrived with my drone, and when I received it, I saw the stalker drone hovering just behind him.

“Is that your family’s drone? It’s a bit close for comfort, you know?”

“No, actually someone is stalking me with it. It’s super creepy.”

“Oh, you should call the police. I’m outta here.”

I closed the door quickly and got my new drone ready.

Pushing it out the front door, I quickly shut it again before navigating the drone with the camera on.

I could see the other drone in front of my door after flying it up.

Strangely, I couldn’t control my drone well, so it seemed like the other drone was getting closer.

**Clang! Clunk!**

A loud sound of metal hitting the front door made me jump.

A black screen.

The drone app gave me a disconnected message.

_Whoops. I might have accidentally collided with the stalker drone._

Checking out the peep hole of the front door, I saw the stalker drone hovering right in front.

_It’s still there?_

Looking down, I saw shredded pieces of my drone on the ground.

_That’s it, I’m calling the police._

After the long call and a long wait, a police car pulled into my driveway.

The stalker drone surprisingly flew away before the policeman got out of his car.

I explained the situation to him and he suggested that I stay with a family member or friend for the time being while he knocks on the neighborhood houses to help me ask around.

Thanking him, I got an okay from a friend to stay over for a few days before packing some essentials.

A knock on the front door stopped me mid-way. Expecting the police officer to be back with some information, I went downstairs.

It was already close to evening time and I felt grateful that the policeman was working even on a Saturday.

At the front door, I checked the peep hole by habit and was so shocked that I jumped back.

It was the stalker drone that somehow knocked, not the policeman.

I called the police again, this time with urgency in my voice.

Explaining that I couldn’t get out of my house because a dangerous drone was outside my front door, I waited for help.

The earlier policeman pulled back into my driveway and the drone flew off again.

“That pesky thing. If only I could shoot it down for you.”

“Um, could you help escort me to my friend’s place? I’m afraid the drone will hurt me unless you’re here.”

“Sure thing. Hop in the back.”

At my friend’s house, I saw the drone outside the window as well.

I warned him not to open any doors without checking outside first.

He gave me his guest room to stay in.

Later that night, I heard the buzzing sound downstairs when I was getting ready for bed.

It was _inside_.

“Michael!”

I yelled and ran into his room before shutting the door.

Closing his laptop, he listened calmly to the situation before reassuring me that he would protect me.

“How did it get inside?” I asked in a panic. “Can you call the police?”

Strangely, he was adamant that the police would not be helpful.

He saw the disbelief on my face and coughed.

“You should just stay here tonight. We’ll deal with it once it runs out of batteries tomorrow morning.”

I sucked in a cold breath.

“Wait, did you let it inside on purpose?”

Michael nodded without changing expressions.

“Yeah, smart right? I trapped it inside now, so it won’t be able to escape. We can take the dead drone to the police station tomorrow, and they can track the owner.”

I was worried. “But what if it damages your walls and breaks your things?”

“Don’t worry, I can just fix the walls and I don’t have anything expensive lying around anyway.”

“Okay…”

I washed up in his ensuite bathroom and awkwardly stood next to the double bed. With the drone buzzing right outside his bedroom door, I couldn’t go get the bedding from the guest room.

Michael looked at me and his eyes looked a little scary. Darker, perhaps.

With a silent stare, he approached me while I reflexively backed up before my back hit the wall.

He closed the distanced immediately. Raising his arms, he trapped me against the wall. His hands were slightly above my head to each side.

Uncomfortable with the closeness, I ducked and twisted my body out through the gap from one side.

My waist was grabbed from behind and I yelped.

His arms tightened around my stomach as he pressed up against me.

“Michael, stop! Let go! I don’t feel that way with you.”

He whispered into my ear.

“Just try me. You might like it.”

I struggled but could not get out of his grasp so I stamped on one of his feet with my heel to release his hold.

“Ow!” He winced.

Locking myself in his bathroom, I regretted not grabbing my phone first.

“Come on. Open the door.”

Michael twisted the knob and the bathroom door began shake and bang against the lock.

A moment of realization hit me.

“It’s you! Y-You’re the stalker!” I stammered in a cold sweat.

The door stopped shaking.

“Come on. Why would I stalk you? Come out and let’s talk this out.”

I shook my head quickly as my mind raced.

“No, I can hear you here just fine. If you need to use the bathroom, just disable your drone and use the one downstairs. I’ll just sleep on the bathroom floor tonight.”

A tsk was heard.

“I’m not the stalker so I can’t disable it. And I need to pee right now. Come on, open the door.”

The doorknob started twisting and the door started banging again.

I hyperventilated.

_I’m trapped. What should I do?_
