POEM STARTER

Write a poem from the perspective of someone drunk and brave.

Play with the style of the poem to convey their current state.

Friends With Benefits?

Lately

I’ve been dreaming about u.

I can’T GET YOU OUT OF MY HEAD—

I think u planted a seed for false memories.

Because so clearly

I see myself waking up next to you

And we’ve lived a thousand lives in this small infinity.

Under the covers,

You show

Me a new religion

After my deity stopped returning my calls.

I think

I could love you even in the dark—

If you don’t mind my brain glitching.

See, it had been sick with the self-guilt

Gratifying instantly but we feel dirty when the birds start singing.

I’ve never showered with a lover—

Scrub my back until last night’s scratches aren’t the only thing burning me at my core.

Maybe I want to forget that I gave you a key

Now that you know my ego is all for show.

So long friend—

I’m

Not the kind of girl who stays for the light.

That’s the benefit—

No strings attached.

You never even had to learn my name.

But if you should ask,

I am the shadows. I am the whisper of V8 engines zipping down a residential street at 2 AM.

Nothing about me is meant for the white picket fence life you started planning when you saw me across the bar.

I’m better at being a one-dimensional side character

Than the leading lady.

I know you didn’t ask—

But this was my last drop of courage

Before the spirit of my father’s ancestors possessed me to drink my liver until I glowed as yellow as the morning sun.
