POEM STARTER
Compose a poem which contrasts the world of dreams with the harshness of reality.
You can choose any style that you think is appropriate.
To Dust
To dream is to escape;
Freedom is a experience only felt while asleep.
When I shut my eyes, and shut my ears.
I can ignore the optimism of my peers.
I’m tired of their lies,
Constant reminders of my past.
When they open their mouths,
I pray these words may be their last.
The beautiful place I go when asleep,
Clenches me and binds my hands and feet.
I embrace its soft words with my desperate grip.
And allow it to flood me with mirage.
It sculps the dust from the rooms of my mind,
The dust from the loved ones who died,
The dust from all those who tried,
The dust from my every lie.
My mind gathers the dust to sculp
Shifty illusions that distort my world.
This world is more welcoming
It’s stories have better endings.
Why can’t the real world bring these to life?
Why must my sadness go on and my mind strife
And strive to see the day I finally die.
To dust I want to return, for from dust I was born.
When I sleep I turn to dust.
I am uncontrolled,
I am enslaved.
When I awake I burn slowly,
To dust I was born, for from dust I will burn.
If only I could sleep forever.
