They’d always told the tale of the lady in the forest, how you should never meet her eyes, for if you did she’d be the last thing you see. People thought it was funny to taunt the children who lived nearby, to threaten them that the lady in the forest was gonna get them if they didn’t behave. I never believed those silly tales, until it was me who was looking in her eyes.
