WRITING OBSTACLE

Write a story about a wild bachelorette party beginning in media res.

'In media res' refers to starting a story at the chronological middle of the plot. What elements will you need to incorporate to ensure the plot still makes sense?

The Guests Arrive

(Sequel of The Bachelorette Party)

———

“Bonnie!” Minnie beckons, very loudly.

“Yeah, dear sister?” Bonnie answers, very sarcastically.

Her older sister is already to the cabin’s doorway, her bride tiara still on her head and white dress pristine.

“When you’re done getting our bags, ask when the others are going to get here,” she orders. With that command, she spins around and does a runway walk into their family cabin like it was a fashion show.

“If the bride says so,” Bonnie mutters under her breath.

She loves her sister and is happy she found happiness, but Minnie can also be a lot.

Especially when she feels entitled to attention. Such as being a bride.

Everyone’s lives have to stop for her special day. No. For her special era (gosh, she can hear that correction in Minnie’s voice).

Bonnie lugs her sister’s massive suitcase from the back seat of her car.

“Minnie? What the hell did you pack? We’re only here for the weekend,” she grunts, as she gets it over the step of the porch.

Minnie’s mouth contorts in a frown. “I have to be prepared. It is my bachelorette party,” she chastises.

“I’m very aware of that. Since you know, I planned everything,” Bonnie points out. She didn’t get why Minnie had her plan it and not her maid of honor. Because yes, she, as Minnie’s older sister, is not her maid of honor.

Bonnie wasn’t surprised when her sister named someone else in that position. It is typical Minnie. What did shock her is who she did pick.

“To my specifications,” Minnie inserts, interrupting her thoughts like she is a wrecking ball.

“How could I forget,” Bonnie mutters sarcastically.

She thought it was quiet enough, but her sister has super hearing and they pick them up.

“Don’t with the attitude. Not during an important time for me.”

Oh of course. Not on her important time period.

Thank goodness she can’t hear eye rolls.

“You’re right. I’m sorry.”

That settles Minnie and she goes into the cabin to probably freshen up. Now Bonnie finally has a moment of peace before chaos inevitably arrives.

Because it will. It seems to always follow her sister.

OoOoO

Chaos appears in the form of the bachelorette guests.

Minnie sure knows how to pick ‘em.

Bonnie glances down at the list on her phone to ensure everyone is here. It also helps she has their associations by their names since she’s not had much interaction with them, except for Gill. Minnie talks about so many people, Bonnie wouldn’t be entirely certain of who these people were to her sister if she hadn’t written it down.

Lexon (best male friend) ✔️

Fran (coworker) ✔️

Gillian (future sister in law) ✔️

Hillary (maid of honor) ✔️

Good everyone made it and on time. Minnie won’t have a cow now.

“Lex!” Minnie squeals. She jumps off the porch to attack him in a painful looking hug. She’s never even that excited to see Jake, and he’s her fiance.

“Hey, Min,” he greets back, equally enthusiastic.

The warmness on both sides isn’t new to Bonnie. She’s seen them grow up together. It kinda made her wonder why they never tried to have a relationship, but according to Minnie, he’s gay, or bi, or something. She didn’t really specify.

Fran gives a little clap and she embraces Minnie next. “I’m so excited to be here!”

Bonnie’s only met Fran twice before. She seemed nice. Her and Minnie work together at the newspaper. Minnie, of course, works in the gossip column, though she recently got a promotion.

From the one conversation she’s had with Fran, Bonnie gets the impression that Fran thinks they are better friends than Minnie does.

When Gill gets out of the car, Minnie welcomes her, but it’s different. Her smile is a bit too wide and her tone a bit too sugary sweet.

This is Minnie acting like she is trying to be nice, but she doesn’t want you around, but she wants to make you think she’s making the effort. But she actually isn’t.

Bonnie knew that her sister and Gill didn’t have the best relationship, but she never understood why.

Gill is so kind and considerate. It would be hard to imagine that she did something to tick Minnie off.

Then there’s Hillary. Her presence and her role is a mystery to Bonnie. Hillary was Minnie’s childhood friend. They were inseparable for a long time until something happened between them in middle school. It felt like overnight things changed.

Now it’s ten years later and she has no idea when they reconciled. Or if they truly did.

Because when Minnie approaches Hillary, she puts on a different performance than she did with Gill. This isn’t her trying to make Hillary feel a certain way.

Hillary appears totally at ease.

Minnie is the one that is tense.

If it were Bonnie in Hillary’s position, Minnie wouldn’t hesitate to chastise her. But there is something that passes between them. Something that Minnie doesn’t say out loud.

Bonnie’s never known Minnie to hold her tongue. That’s suspicious in itself.

Since the bride is still her sister, no matter if she is being a bridezilla, she interrupts whatever is happening with her and Hillary.

“Ok everyone! We have three whole days at the cabin, and we have lots of fun planned. Let’s head inside.”

For the first time in probably their whole lives, Minnie shoots Bonnie a grateful glance. It isn’t long, just a fleeting moment, but it something that she catches.

Bonnie just can’t help but wonder what why.
