Mike’s Mark

The trek in the woods has been an enduring battle. Constant mishaps have gotten us lost many times. It’s just me and my friend on this trip. We are both well accredited scholars. We set out to these woods to learn about the wildlife here. I brought my friend because he is my trusted partner.

What he doesn’t know, is that in these woods I have found a healing plant. This plant actually heals cancer but I’ve kept this information for myself because such a find comes with much responsibility. I must test and try this plant on the disease first, then I must speak to my colleagues and get patented. It’s a long process and I know many aren’t to be trusted.

“Hey bud, so what is this trip about? Why did you ask me to tag along?”

“Well, I need help out in the wilderness. You’re a skilled man with a gun and I need you look out for me. Plus, I said there’s compensation involved.”

“We’ve been here for days. I think I’m losing it. I need to get home, professor.”

The professor lightly laughs.

They had to approach the cascading waterfalls. It was mapped near a cave where these plants grew. The soil brought special properties to the plant. He had seen this plant once in a picture, that was shone to him. The man who showed it to him was his professor. The old man had passed away recently from a heart attack. His last words to him were for him to go find the plant and to publish its properties to their community. That is why the journey begun.

The professor had heard of these woods but he never imagined how immense it is. He felt equipped enough to be out here, but his heart palpitates with worry, that worsens each day. In the woods, are bears and wolves to worry about. There’s also the worry of getting lost.

The woods are vibrant green with towering trees. There’s streams along the path and the wildlife is loud. Sometimes, me and my friend fish for dinner. This environment tests my skills but it’s nothing I’m not accustomed to. These days, are what makes me a man, and a professed geographer and biologist.

You see, my friend is a scholar in law. He studied Criminal Justice and is heading to the big leagues in policing. That’s why he’s my man to trust. “He’s brave and courage goes a long way in the wilderness.” “Lately, we had lost contact but this journey spurred up our old friendship.”To be honest, science takes long hours of my life and it’s work few understand at times.

On this night, we set up tent by a small stream near by. As the drawn map has it, we had 2 more days of hiking to reach the waterfall.

“Mike, so how’s the Criminal justice field treating you?”

“Not bad professor,” he laughs.

“I see.”

Well, we had fish that night and we talked about the past. We spoke on how we met and how we managed to pass college exams. Also, how I had thought about being in forensic but ended up doing something else.

“So what’s this trip about?”

“I’m doing research on the biodiversity. We have 2 more days left until we reach the cascades.”

“Honestly, this trip seems senseless. The only reason I’m here is because I owed you one. It’s been a while since we’ve spoken but I respect your intellect.”

“Well I promise you, we are almost there.”

Mike was pleased to hear that this trip was almost over. He’s tired of the wilderness and wishes to be home at ease. Him and the professor had known each other many years ago, but recently this professor has been accused of insanity. Many people criticize his work, but I had given him my word to tag along.

That night, Mike went to the professor’s tent when he was deep in his sleep. The professor muttered words and moved his arms in his sleep. Then Mike finds a binder titled “The Wonder Plant To Cure Cancer.” He then sees the plants diagrams and content. He finds the map of the plants location. He wonders to himself, why did the professor hide this information?

After the discovery of the plant binder, Mike heads down to sleep.

The next morning both are awakened at sunrise. More hiking and scavenging through the woods. Then Mike springs up question about the trip once again. The professor just stutters that they will reach the location he needs to find. Mike just can’t stay content with the response received.

They set the full day hiking into the woods trying to find this place. Then Mike brings up plants and research. This gets the professor excited and he spills information about the cancer treating plant.

Mike responds, that nothing he speaks of makes sense. The government would be involved if a cure for cancer was found. Also, they had doubts that maybe nothing was to be found.

Mike thought about his career for a moment. If word got out about him helping this professor, would his work be at risk. Maybe he could change up and save the day. The professor seems quacked.

The next day, the cascades are reached. They spend hours looking for the plants. Which there is none. The professor loses his mind, he begins talking to himself and begins to hallucinate. His failure brings him to despair. Then he turns to Mike and pulls a gun on him.

“You! It’s your fault! You’ve led me astray!”

His eyes are bewildered. His face looked wrecked and evil. How was this Mike’s fault? He endured all these days to come to this?

Then comes a bullet between the professor’s eyes. Mike was not a man who let’s chance join in but rather he plays it to his favor. His skilled mark makes him in this business. Old professor quack was just hoax.
