POEM STARTER

Write a winter Pantoum.

A pantoum is a poem where each stanza is 4 lines, and the second and fourth line of each stanza are repeated as the first and third lines of the next. As this creates a lot of repetition, try to pick a winter theme that would benefit from emphasis of certain lines.

My half broken bed feels a little more beaten The frigidity of the air feels like home, When the rustic autumn leaves disappear under the new season And I start to feel more alone. The frigidity of the air feels like home Forget warm cocoa and Christmas lights And I start to feel more alone, Because of the shorter days feel like longer nights. Forget warm cocoa and Christmas lights Chestnuts envelop my senses with song Because of the shorter days and longer nights I hate the winter, where has the sun gone?

Wow this is such a difficult structure but so effective and you’ve done a great job!! It’s so autumnal and indicative of the changing season. Very evocative!

I wonder if you can relook at the line ‘because of the shorter days and longer nights’. Could you replaced ‘becuse of the’ with ‘with much’?

So it reads

‘I start to feel more alone

With much shorter days and longer nights’

And

‘With much shorter days and longer nights

I hate the winter…’

What do you think? Just a thought
