The Last Laugh
Lippman couldn’t wait to see his old enemy’s stone.
I outlived the old fool, Lippmann thought. Life was good.
He didn’t know why anyone would choose to be buried in a graveyard that required stones to have one’s last words, but with Vandyke that would be his way, to choose something ridiculous.
It took a while to find, but there it was. Richard Vandyke. Lippmann walked closer to the stone, which was in the shade of a willow tree so he couldn’t see the tiny inscribed last words until he got right up close.
“LOOK OUT.” The inscription said.
Look out? Huh?
Too late. Vandyke’s foot tapped the trap, and the rope snapped.
His body was found later, cut in two, his lifeless eyes staring at Lippmann’s stone.
