In The Night

Once the sun slips behind the horizon

When tomorrow leers over tonight

Shadows creep around quiet corners

Claiming buildings as their own.

Once the moonlight sparkles dimly

After darkness takes the town

Buildings whisper to one another

While roads speak of nights to come.

But far from urban solidarity

Far from the comforts of sweet home

Black woods loom on the city’s edge

Unheard from until twilight falls.

Howls rip through tall boughs of pine

Twisted voices broken in time

Shifting shapes and thudding hearts

Fear as red eyes lock with mine.
