every horizon
i met you at dusk
it was the third wednesday of may
and your friends
and my friends
and you and me
were drinking sodas instead of beer
because we were wiser than our classmates
who thought that speaking to the cops
in a drunken state of mind
was the way to live life
anyways
you and me fought for a cream soda
which i later discovered you prefer over root beer
we finally settled to split it
until you accused me of backwashing
and took the whole bottle for yourself
neither of us noticed
how the rest of the friend group was silently watching
as we began to fall in love
we all drove home to kai’s house
arriving one minute after curfew
and threw blankets and pillows onto the grassy backyard
they all fell asleep
but you and i stayed awake
whispering mischievously
at six twenty seven
we got up
tip toed past our snoring friends
and ran to the seven eleven for coffee
cups in hand
we stepped into the dawn
forever changed
