STORY STARTER
Submitted by Lynn Kruse
As you regain consciousness, out of breath and leaning against a tree in the forest, you have the urgent feeling that you need to run...
Run
_Black_.
That’s what I had seen a moment before. I wasn’t sure how long that moment had been, but now it was over. Fuzz came into my eyes as I tried to take in my surroundings.
_Blurry_.
Everything was blurry. I could not see.
I took a deep breath. Then another. And another.
My lungs ached. Why did they ache? Then I was gasping for breath.
_I shouldn’t be here. __I shouldn’t be here. _

I need to go. But where? Where was I?
The fuzz in my vision started to fade away. Trees. That’s what I saw. Trees and trees stretching on for miles.
_Why was I in a forest? _I shouldn’t be.
_Cold_.
Snow covered the ground in every direction. The cold suddenly bit through my worn clothes. My shock had saved me from feeling it earlier. My arms were bare. I should not be outside. I need to go.
_Run_.
I need to run. I need to get away. Where am I?
A sharp pain rushed through my body as I tried to step forward in the thick, slushy snow.
_Blood_.
The ground below be was red.
Red with _my_ blood.
My leg was torn and my arm had a huge gash right through the middle.
I needed to go. Get away.
I started. One foot in front of the other.
_Faster_.
Faster and faster.
Each step agony. Each step blurring my vision more and more.
_Am I even walking _straight? No. My foot hit the trunk of the tree.
_Pain. _

Fight through it. Keep on running. Keep on moving. Run.
Each step shattering my vision. Holding me back.
_Thump_.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Footsteps were coming. _They_ were coming. _Who were they? _
__
__
One step. Two step. Run. Run.
I ran.
Ran and ran. Pushing through the pain. Nothing in my sight.
_Black_.
