Death catches up to all of us

It was cold when she first arrived there and she is now more sensitive to the heat in the domain she found herself in. It was almost unbearable. She grew used to the cold. At night she had to sleep with one leg out of the covers just to feel the cold so that she would be reminded of what it was like. She didn’t want to be reminded but in some sort of way she couldn’t help herself.

The city of death intrigued her. She had only travelled there because He told her too. And although the place reeked of flesh and bones and dirt, after all the stories she heard from those who dwelled there she couldn’t help but think of them sometimes. She wondered did they think of her too.

She felt like Persephone from Greek Mythology, sent to the underworld to please others’ wishes and upon returning to the world as we know it, being overwhelmed with the feeling of warmth as spring and summer arrive.

She wasn’t quite too sure why He had sent her. After all, she was just a beginner in these things. She thought maybe He wanted her to come back and share the news of what she saw, help people reach out to their loved ones in this city of death or recognise what we need to change in the world and be strong enough to carry it out.

But Shelly wasn’t brave enough. She didn’t have a voice and she thought that no one would believe her. Who would? People’s faith is thin nowadays and she didn’t want to be made a fool of. It is a pretty far fetched story. So why did he choose her to go and not someone else to speak out? Maybe it was a test.

All she could think about now was while going to sleep was the desire to be cold again. Almost a fresh feeling that reminded her of the friends she had met in the city of death. Although she wasn’t there for long, it felt like home and she had met the most amazing people. Friends even. More than what she had here.

It comforted her to know that she’d get to go back there soon or one day at least. Death comes to all of us anyway. So what’s the point in sharing the news? People will find out for themselves eventually...
