Drawing from typical tropes of supernatural or ghost stories, create a short story set in an old manor house.
Home Sweet Home
The flight over from the United States had been a long one for the Johnson family so when they landed at Heathrow airport, they couldn’t wait to get to the new home that Bob, Janet and their two boys Billy and Jack were moving into. Bob had inherited the new home from his grandparents earlier in the year after they had passed away., but he had never actually seen it though he was told it was huge.
When the limo picked them up from the airport Bob told the boys that they should probably take a nap since it was over two hours away and so they headed to their new home. The countryside was so beautiful, and Janet was taking pictures of the scenery; and Bob was hoping this trip was worthy so when they pulled up to their new home his jaw dropped.
The house was impressive with white stone front, multiple chimneys and what had to be at least two dozen windows just on the front side. The hedges around the front and side were perfectly manicured and had to have been done by a professional. The front doors appeared to made of either oak or mahogany with a large rod iron hoop on the front. This was their new home and he and Janet woke up the boys to see where they were to live from now on.
Walking through the front door another surprise awaited them a whole group of house help including a butler and maids. Bob looked around and walked up to the butler and said, “I’m sorry sir but I don’t have any way to pay you.”. The butler smiled at him and pointed to the table and said, “That won’t be a problem sir.” and pointed to the table at the center of the great entrance where an envelope was laying. Bob walked over and opened it up and his mouth dropped open, he looked back at his family and said, “We’re rich.”.
In the envelope was a check for over twenty million pounds. His wife and children hugged them and then the doors slammed shut behind them on their own. They figured it must be the wind and made their way through the twenty-seven-room house to try and make themselves at home, or as much as they are good. The one good thing was that the original furniture had been left so the house was completely empty, they were happy.
The first night in the house they had the cook make them a special meal for their first night, London broil with fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes. The meal was amazing and when they were finished, he told the maid to let the chef know it was one of the best meals he ever had. Then he and the family went to the family room to relax before bed.
The fire in the room was blazing in the big fireplace in the family room. The boys were reading while Bob and Janet drank wine and talked about their new found fortune. The night was going lovely when they heard the large front door start banging back and forth. Bob jumped up from his chair and ran to the front of the house where he saw the doors swinging back and forth. He ran up and pushed them shut and latched them.
_Now how in the hell did those big as doors open, _he thought to himself. The next thing he heard was the chandelier start swinging as the crystal chimed as they struck each other; and then there was a crash when it fell to the floor barely missing him. Janet and the children came running to where he was only to see the once friendly looking butler’s face start to distort and throw curses at them letting him know they were going to all die tonight. Bob ran over and grabbed his family and tried to open the front door, but it wouldn’t budge so they ran to the stairs to head upstairs.
When they got to the base of the steps the maid was waiting for them and pointed at them and said, “It’s time.” Then she pointed up to where the chandelier had been where four ropes hung with nooses at the end. Janet screamed and the boys began to cry. Bob looked at the ghost and said, “What are you saying. We aren’t going to…”.
Then they were thrown across the front room and felt themselves being lift up off the ground as the entire staff appeared below them. They felt the nooses start to wrap around their necks. They tried to move but they were paralyzed; and the nooses began to tighten and then there was a snap, and Bob woke up in his bed in New York City. He looked over at the tickets on the table next to their bed and tore them up...” No way”. he mumbled and went back to sleep.
