Sweet Silence

We never needed music when she took me by the hand,

We’d dance around the room to an imaginary band.

She tucked my hair behind my ear,

She never said a word.

Her eyes sang every love song that my ears had ever heard.

We never needed words to fill the empty air,

We’d snuggle close together in our old velvet chair.

She held me tight and kissed my head,

Our love was just so real.

Her soft heartbeat beneath my palm was all I wished to feel.

We never needed music when we lay beneath the stars,

We’d name the constellations and we said the world was ours.

She took my hand within her own,

And claimed my heart as well.

Her pulse under my fingertips said more than words could tell.

We never needed words, not even when she fell ill,

I’d sit beside her bed with her and help her take her pills.

I watched her as she shaved her head,

Became a second nurse.

I cried with her every time her condition would get worse.

The only time we needed words was when we said goodbye,

We both whispered ‘I love you’ and she closed her hazel eyes.

I still feel her when I close my eyes,

And see her in the dead of night.

When I look up to the sky and see it’s gained another light.
