One Long Night
How do you sleep when the sky is screaming?
How can you dream when the clouds are teeming
With water that beats on the outside wall
In torrents of great flooding waterfalls?
How do you rest when the air is flashing
With brilliant light through the darkness gashing?
The blinds on your windows are no match
For luminous reflections on the silver latch
How do you nap with the sonic boom
Like a drum line performing inside of your room?
With perfect rhythm that wakes you each time
Your eyes finally close and you think you are fine
There’s no way to sleep with a raging storm
Even with pillows cool and blankets so warm
Just pull over your shoulders the covers more tight
And accept that it’s going to be a long night
